Sea Glass Hexagon Afghan – Free Crochet Blanket Pattern

My love for making crochet afghans has increased over the past several years. When I first learned to crochet, making a blanket was a daunting task for me and I had what I refer to as “crochet ADD”. The thought of crocheting the same row over and over and over again wasn’t stimulating enough.

I needed more interesting blanket designs so I designed a couple cable crochet blankets and released my Cascading Cables Afghan, followed by my Hourglass Cabled Blanket. I soon realized that although the crochet cables added a lot of visual interest to the blankets, I was still crocheting rows of the same stitch patterns.

Then, in 2019 I began designing a variety of different crochet blankets. I designed a square crochet blanket and several different blankets crocheted on the bias using different C2C stitches (corner-to-corner blankets aka C2C). I also designed a granny square blanket using C2C crochet squares that created a modern crochet blanket (a 6-in-1 design).

I quickly realized that I loved designing granny square blankets and blankets crocheted on the bias because they kept me interested. It was then that I realized I hadn’t yet designed a hexagon crochet blanket. This was when I designed my first, the Succulent Spring Hexagon Afghan.

One of my favorite parts of designing a crochet hexagon blanket pattern was that it made a great project to take along with me on long car rides. The crochet hexagon motifs were small enough to pack and to work on my lap. When crocheting and designing my first crochet hexagon quilt pattern, I knew it wouldn’t be my last.

How to Make a Hexagon Crochet Blanket

This hexagon crochet blanket pattern is made by first crocheting several motifs using the hexagon crochet pattern. You will also crochet a few half hexagons that will be placed along the sides of the crochet hexagon blanket.

After crocheting all hexagon blanket motifs, refer to the included blanket schematic to arrange and assemble them. Use a flat slip stitch seam to join the motifs.

After joining all of the crochet hexagons, a simple crochet hexagon blanket border is added to pull it all together.

I also think it’s fun to add yarn tassels to the points of crochet hexagon blankets, like I did with my Succulent Spring Hexagon Afghan.

THE YARN

For this hexagon crochet afghan, I chose Lion Brand Yarns Ferris Wheel and Vanna’s Choice, which are both worsted weight yarns.

Ferris Wheel is a 100% acrylic roving yarn that is lightweight and has beautiful self-striping color ways that lend themself to an ombre effect. It is available in 12 gorgeous colors. Vanna’s Choice is a 100% acrylic yarn that is available in 36 gorgeous colors.

Lion Brand Yarns Ferris Wheel self-striping yarn was perfect for this design because all of the colorwork was done for me. I don’t know about you, but my favorite part of a self-striping yarn is that I’m not left with a bunch of extra ends to weave in from working color changes.

Although I really love the colors in the self-striping yarn, I didn’t want the crochet hexagons to get too busy so I added a little white as a contrast to break it all up. But if you don’t want to change colors like I did, I believe a solid colored hexagon blanket would be absolutely stunning as well!

For the Sea Glass Hexagon Afghan, I’ve combined several simple crochet stitches and the colorwork of the yarn to add visual interest to this texture crochet blanket. Each crochet hexagon motif uses the granny stitch, linen stitch (aka moss stitch), and double crochet cluster stitches.

This free crochet hexagon blanket pattern is easily customizable so you can make it smaller for a baby shower gift or larger for a wedding gift! 12″ Full Hexagon Instructions – Make 18

Note: Pay close attention to the joining instructions. I’ve joined most rounds into the BLO of the first stitch to help minimize the seam.

Tip! I highly suggest using locking stitch markers where noted. They will help to keep you on track while you crochet and they come in very handy when seaming the hexagons together.

Rnd 1 (RS / MC): With a 5.50mm crochet hook & MC yarn, ch 2, work 6 sc into the 2nd ch from your hook. Do not join. (6 sts)

Rnd 2 (MC): Alt-dc in the first st, work 1 more dc in the first st, work 2 dc in each remaining st around. Join with a sl st to the BLO of the alt-dc.  (12 sts)

Rnd 3 (MC): Work an alt-dc in the space between the first 2 sts of round 2, work 1 more dc in the same space, work 2 dc in the space between each 2 dc’s around. Join with a sl st to the BLO of the alt-dc. (24 sts)

Row 14 (RS / MC): Ch 1, 2 sc in the first st (place a SM in the 1st st), (sc in each of the next 25 sts, 3 sc in the next ch-2 sp) twice, then sc in each of the next 25 sts, 2 sc in the last st (place a SM in the last st). Do not turn. (85 sts) Place stitch markers in the 2nd sc of each 3 sc group, in each corner of the half hexagon. These will help make seaming go much more smoothly.

Do not turn. Do not fasten off. Continue on to Edging the Unfinished Edge.

Edging the Unfinished Edge

In this section, you’ll add a single crochet edge to the sides of the rows of the half hexagon.

Row 1 (RS / MC): Do not move the 4 SM you placed in Row 14, rotate your half hexagon so that you can work into the sides of the rows, work 1 sc in the side of each sc row and 2 sc in the side of each dc row across, I also added a sc in the ch-2 from Row 1. Do not join. (43 sts)  Do not move the SM’s.

Fasten off. Weave in ends. Approximate length of the longest edge should be 13.25″ (unstretched). Continue on to Layout & Seaming.

Layout & Seaming

Step 1: Use the layout shown in the schematic above to arrange your hexagons.

Step 2: Use locking stitch markers or scrap pieces of yarn to hold the hexagons together while you seam. Make sure to place the stitch markers in the middle single crochet at each corner to keep your hexagons lined up straight. See photos below.

Step 3: Use a 5.00mm crochet hook to work a flat slip stitch crochet seam, work all vertical seams shown in red.

Step 4: Using a flat slip stitch seam, work all horizontal zig-zag seams.

Weave in all ends. Continue on to Crochet Blanket Border.

Tip! If your border starts to become wavy, go down a hook size or two until it’s nice and flat. If your edges start to cinch inward, go up a hook size or two.

Rnd 1 (RS/MC): Refer to the green arrow on the schematic from above, using a 5.50mm crochet hook and MC yarn, join yarn with a standing sc in the corner that the green arrow is pointing to then work in the direction of the pink arrow. Work 1 sc in each st around the hexagon blanket, except work 3 sc in each of the peaks at the top and bottom edge of the afghan and work a sc3tog in each valley along the top and bottom edge of the afghan. Do not join. Stitch count isn’t crucial.

Rnd 2 (MC): Work 1 sc in each st around the blanket, except work 3 sc in each of the peaks at the top and bottom edge of the blanket and work a sc3tog in each valley along the top and bottom edge of the blanket. Join with a sl st to the first st of the round. Stitch count isn’t crucial.
