A lot of the places we visit have internal cooling or air-conditioning units and it can get pretty chilly inside if you’re just wearing a casual tee or tank.
That’s where this summer cardigan comes in. It’s light enough for you to carry around in your tote and you can pull it on whenever you feel the need. The lacy openwork allows for plenty of ventilation and the chic design completes any outfit.
The Capucine Cropped Crochet Cardigan has an easy construction to it and the panels are held together with three large buttons. These extra details really make the piece yours so you can decide whichever ones to use. You can find all kinds of buttons at the crafts store these days, including ones with letters on them if you want to add some personalization as well.

How to Crochet a Cardigan
There’s nothing complicated about working up this cropped crochet cardigan and it has minimal seaming. It is made by crocheting a back panel, two front panels, and two sleeves. Each of the front panels has a little neck shaping to give it that tidy V when you button the sweater up.
After crocheting all pieces, you’ll begin seaming. First, you’ll seam the shoulders. Next, you’ll attach the top edge of the sleeves to the cardigan. Then, you’ll seam the bottom of the sleeves and the sides of the cardigan.
Lastly, you’ll crochet an edging around the front opening to give it that neat finish and attach buttons of your choosing.

Best Yarn for Crochet Sweaters
For crochet summer sweaters, while there are many options to choose from, I used a cotton and merino wool blend yarn. It is the perfect choice for a lightweight garment because it is breathable, soft, and gentle on the skin. Its natural fibers, paired with the openwork of the cardigan, allow air to circulate, keeping the body comfortable.
Cotton yarn can also usually be washed regularly without the worry of unraveling or distorting your work. Offering comfort, functionality, and durability, it was the best option for this cardigan. It’s also readily available and can come in a variety of colors which allows you to choose just the right one for whoever is receiving this summer crochet sweater.
Choosing Which Size to Crochet
To choose your size, look over the size chart below. Model wears a women’s small and is wearing a small sample.
- ‘Fits Bust’ measurement is the measurement of the intended wearer, not the garment’s finished measurement.
- Finished Bust, Back Panel Width, and Cardigan Length are measurements of the finished garment.
- This cardigan has 4-8″+ of positive ease built in for a classic fit.
- If you prefer a more loosely fitted cardigan, I would suggest making a cardigan one size larger than bust size.
- Cardigan length is measured from the nape of the neck down.
- Adjusting Cardigan Length: See the notes at the end of the Back Panel section for adjusting length.

Yarn
This women’s crochet summer sweater was designed with a DK weight yarn to make sure it would have a beautiful drape to it while also being lightweight enough for the warmer months. I chose not to use a bulkier yarn for fear it would then be too thick to be worn as a summer cardigan (we want to get the most wear out of this everyday piece).
I chose Lion Brand Cottino in Straw for my cropped crochet cardigan. This is a DK weight / 3, cotton and wool blend yarn and it’s currently available in beautiful colors. This yarn offers a smooth even texture in a contemporary color palette with plenty of neutral tones.

Tip: If you decide to shorten or lengthen your cardigan, make sure to write down how many rows you made your back panel so that you make your front panels the same length.

At this point, your sleeve should measure approximately 13-1/2″ W x 3-3/4″ H (13-1/2″ W x 3-3/4″ H, 15-1/4″ W x 3-3/4″ H, 15-1/4″ W x 3-3/4″ H, 17″ W x 3-3/4″ H, 17″ W x 3-3/4″ H, 18-3/4″ W x 3-3/4″ H, 18-3/4″ W x 3-3/4″ H, 18-3/4″ W x 3-3/4″ H).
Fasten off, leaving a tail of yarn that is 3 times the width of the last row. This tail of yarn will be used for seaming the sleeves onto the cardigan. Make a second sleeve and then continue on to the Seaming.
Seaming
Step 1 – Shoulder Seams: Lay out the two panels with the RS facing up, as shown in the photo below. Line up the stitches from each shoulder to corresponding stitches on the back panel. Use locking stitch markers to hold the panels together. With a yarn needle and tail of yarn that was left, seam the shoulder using a mattress stitch.
Weave in ends. Seam the second shoulder, then continue to Attaching the Sleeves.

Step 2 – Attaching the Sleeves: First, mark the armhole openings. Measure down 6-3/4″ (6-3/4″, 7-1/2″, 7-1/2″, 8-1/2″, 8-1/2″, 9-1/4″, 9-1/4″, 9-1/4″) on each side of the shoulder seam and place a locking SM. Find the center of the last row of a sleeve and line it up with a shoulder seam. Hold the corners of the sleeve in place with the locking stitch markers you just placed. With a yarn needle and tail of yarn, attach the top edge of the sleeve to the cardigan with a mattress stitch.
Weave in ends. Seam the second sleeve, then continue to Side Seams.

Step 3 – Side Seams: Fold the cardigan at the shoulder seams with the RS facing out, as shown in the photo below. Line up the stitches along the bottom of the sleeve and down the side of the cardigan. Use locking stitch markers to hold the panels together. With a yarn needle and piece of yarn, seam the bottom of the sleeve and side of the cardigan.
Weave in ends. Seam the opposite side, then continue to Front Opening Edging.

Front Opening Edging
Row 1 (RS): With yarn & a 4.00mm crochet hook, join yarn with a standing sc in the bottom right corner of the cardigan’s front opening, working up and around the front opening edge, work 1 sc into each sc row and 2 sc into each dc row until you reach the bottom corner on the front left panel. Turn. Stitch count isn’t crucial.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around the front opening of the cardigan. Turn. Stitch count isn’t crucial.
Tip: If your edging gets wavy, place 3 – 4 sc2tog along the neck opening.
Row 3: Alt-dc in the first st, * ch 1, skip the next st, 2dc-cl in the next st, rep from * across to the last st, dc in the last st. Turn. Stitch count isn’t crucial.
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each st and ch-1 sp around the front opening. Stitch count isn’t crucial.
Fasten off. Weave in ends. Block, if desired. Continue on to Buttons.
Buttons
The spaces between the 2dc-cl in row 3 will act as buttonholes.
Position 3 or 4 buttons, wherever you’d like them, along the straight portion of the front opening edging.
With a needle and thread, attach the buttons to the front opening edging. Weave in ends.
