The Yarn

For this crochet mens pullover, I chose Lion Brand Yarns Wool Ease, which is a worsted weight yarn. Wool Ease is an acrylic / wool blend yarn that is available in 66 gorgeous colors. Although Wool Ease is classified as a Craft Yarn Council 4 / worsted weight yarn, I’ve found that it is on the lighter side of most worsted weight yarns. Keep this in mind if you plan to substitute your favorite worsted weight yarn.

Pattern Notes

  • I tend to crochet on the tighter side. You may need to go down a hook size (or two) to meet gauge if you crochet on the looser side.
  • Turning chains are not included in stitch count.
  • The first stitch of a row/round is worked into the same stitch as the turning chain, unless otherwise specified.
  • Yarn: Yarn used for the sample shown here is Lion Brand Yarns Wool Ease in Denim (3 oz / 85 g / 197 yards / 180 m / 80% acrylic / 20% wool) per ball.
  • You can use another lighter worsted weight yarn as long as it’s similar in thickness and you match gauge. If the yarn you choose is thicker, you may still match gauge, but it will affect the drape of your pullover.
  • Chains (for chain spaces) are included in stitch count.
  • Changes for sizes are written as follows: XS (S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL)
  • Yardage: Please refer to the size chart below.
  • Model wears a men’s medium. Shown wearing a medium sample.
  • The waistband is crocheted first. Then you’ll work the pullover from the bottom up beginning by working into the sides of the waistband. You’ll then split for the front and back panels and create the armhole openings. After the main portion of the pullover is completed, you’ll whipstitch the shoulder seams. The sleeves are then crocheted directly onto the pullover and worked from armhole to cuff. Lastly, you’ll work a stretchy band around the neck opening.

Lengthening the Torso

Do you have a guy who has a longer than average torso? No worries, simply use this guide to make your custom length sweater!

Step 1: Work the waist band as written.

Step 2: Work the Body of Sweater as written. This is where you will add more length to the torso. Continue repeating Body of Sweater Round 2, until you’ve added the additional length you desire. Continue on to Body of Sweater – Textured Section.

Lengthening Sleeves

The sleeves are worked in joined rows (rounds) from armhole to cuff. To lengthen the sleeves, simply repeat the last round before the cuff, making sure to end with a WS round, until your sleeves are the desired length and then add the 3.5″ cuff.

Special Decrease Stitch: Beginning in Round 9 of the Textured Section of Sleeve, you will see a special decrease. When the pattern instructs you to: dc2tog over the next 2 sts 2 rounds below (skipping over a dc), the following is how this decrease is properly worked. This specific dc2tog will decrease your stitch count by 2 stitches because you are skipping over 1 stitch.

Note: Pay close attention to the wording of each decrease because in some rounds you will work a standard dc2tog and in others you will work as shown in the photos below.

Photo Above Left: The white arrows are pointing to the 2 skipped dc from 2 rounds below that you need to work your dc2tog into.

Photo Above Right: The green arrow is pointing to the dc you will skip while working the dc2tog.

  1. I am most of the way through the men’s split-level pullover crochet-sweater at the moment and can honestly say that it is such a fun, well-written pattern, with clear instructions and directions. I almost don’t want to finish this project for fear of having FOMO once it is complete. i may just have to make a second one!

Thank you, Jennifer, for a well-written, well-designed pattern. I am certainly looking forward to trying more of your patterns in the near future.
