My favorite thing to design for crochet Christmas decorations each year is a pattern for a Christmas stocking. I love that you can create heirloom handmade Christmas stockings your family will cherish for years to come.

This year, I was able to quickly come up with the crochet stocking pattern, but I couldn’t decide on the style of cuff I wanted. For hours, I went back and forth between a simple cuff, a ribbed crochet cuff, and a faux fur cuff. I couldn’t make up my mind so I finally decided to make three crochet stockings, each with a different cuff.

I also ordered personalized wood stocking tags this year. If you’re crocheting a stocking as a gift, these personalized stocking tags make a great addition!

CROCHET STOCKING YARN

For these crochet Christmas socks, I chose two different worsted weight yarns from Lion Brand Yarns. The cream and red colored crochet stockings were made using Lion Brand Wool Ease and the green colored Christmas stocking was crocheted with Lion Brand Yarns Basic Stitch.

Faux fur yarn is extremely popular to use for Christmas stocking designs. There’s just something about it that adds a cozy Christmas vibe.

I chose Lion Brand Yarns Go For Faux in the color Baked Alaska for the faux fur cuff option for this Christmas crochet stocking. Go For Faux yarn is a super bulky novelty yarn that is available in 12 great colors.

  • Note: Lion Brand Yarns also has a Go For Faux Thick & Quick. When yarn shopping, make sure to grab the original Go For Faux, super bulky 6 yarn and not the thick & quick 7 weight yarn.

What is the BEST yarn to use for crochet Christmas stockings?

When searching for crochet Christmas patterns, you’ll find that the most popular weight of yarn used for crochet stockings is worsted weight yarn. Worsted weight yarn is not only durable, it also works up pretty quickly.

Worsted weight yarns are great for both simple crochet stitch pattern stockings and crochet stockings with cables.

The following are my favorite worsted weight yarns to use for Christmas stockings: Lion Brand Pound of LoveLion Brand Vanna’s Choice, and Lion Brand Wool Ease

For a chunky crochet christmas stocking pattern (bulky yarn), here are a couple great options: Lion Brand Hue & Me and Lion Brand Basic Stitch Antimicrobial Thick & Quick.

How much yarn do I need to crochet a Christmas stocking?

The answer to this question varies greatly depending on the weight of yarn the stocking pattern calls for, the crochet stitches used, and the size of the stocking.

  • A simple, small stocking crochet pattern will use much less yarn than a large textured, Christmas stocking pattern.
  • A stocking made using simple crochet stitches will use much less yarn than a classic Christmas stocking pattern with crochet cables, or a deeply textured crochet stitch pattern.

That said, you can plan to crochet most medium size crochet stockings with approximately 280 – 400 yards of a worsted weight yarn.

PATTERN NOTES

  • Turning chain(s) are not included in stitch count, unless noted otherwise.
  • First stitch of each row is worked in the same stitch as the turning chain, unless otherwise specified.

Crochet Stocking Pattern

Choose a Cuff Option

There are 3 cuff options for this crochet stocking pattern. The following is how each Christmas stocking is constructed depending on the cuff option you choose.

Simple Cuff – Cream Crochet Stocking

  • To crochet a stocking with the simple cuff option, you will begin with the section titled “Leg of Stocking”. You will then continue on and complete each section in order: Stacked Diamonds Design, Heel, Foot of Stocking, and Toe. You will finish your stocking by working surface crochet around the top edge and then adding a hanging loop.

Ribbed Cuff – Red Crochet Stocking

  • To crochet a stocking with the ribbed cuff option, you will begin with the section titled “Ribbed Cuff Option”, then work the section titles “Prepare Cuff for Stocking”. You will then continue on and complete each section in order: Stacked Diamonds Design, Heel, Foot of Stocking, and Toe. You will finish your stocking by adding a hanging loop.

Faux Fur Cuff – Green Crochet Stocking

  • To crochet a stocking with the faux fur cuff option, you will begin with the section titled “Leg of Stocking”. You will then continue on and complete each section in order: Stacked Diamonds Design, Heel, Foot of Stocking, and Toe. You will then crochet a faux fur cuff, seam the short edges, and whipstitch it to the top edge of your stocking. You will finish your stocking by adding a hanging loop.

Ribbed Cuff Option

Note: The cuff is worked flat, in rows, then seamed. You’ll then begin working the stocking around one edge of the cuff.

Gauge: In BLO hdc, 15 sts = 4″; 10 rows = 3.5″

Row 1 (RS): With yarn & a 4.00 mm crochet hook, ch 16, working into the back humps of the ch, hdc in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each ch across. Turn. (15 sts)

Rows 2 – 40: Ch 1, BLO hdc in each st across. Turn. (15 sts)

Seam: With WS facing out, bring row 1 up to meet the last row, slip stitch the first and last rows together.

Do not fasten off. Approximately size: 4″ W x 14″ L. Continue to Prepare Cuff for Stocking.

Prepare Cuff for Stocking

Gauge: BLO sc with a 4.00mm hook, 18 sts = 4″; 13 rows = 3″

Row 1 (RS): With the WS of the ribbed cuff facing out, continue with a 4.00 mm crochet hook, work the following around the edge of the cuff: (sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st) 20 times. Do not join. (60 sts)

Begin using a stitch marker or scrap piece of yarn to keep track of the beginning of each round. Move this stitch marker up as you complete each round.

Leg of Stocking – Simple Cuff & Faux Fur Cuff Options

Simple Cuff & Faux Fur Cuff Options: This is where you begin a stocking with either a simple cuff or faux fur cuff. This section is NOT for the ribbed cuff stocking option.

Gauge: BLO sc with a 4.00mm hook, 18 sts = 4″; 13 rows = 3″

Set-up: With yarn & a 4.00mm crochet hook, ch 60, being careful not to twist the chain, join with a sl st to the 1st ch. (60 chs)

Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 1, working into the back hump of the ch, sc in each ch around. Do not join. (60 sts)

Begin using a stitch marker or scrap piece of yarn to keep track of the beginning of each round. Move this stitch marker up as you complete each round.

Rnds 2 – 5: Sc in each st around. (60 sts)

Rnds 6 – 7: BLO sc in each st around. (60 sts)

Do not fasten off. Continue on to Stacked Diamonds Design.

Stacked Diamonds Design

Note: This section is worked in continuous rounds (a spiral). Do not join at the end of each round, instead use a scrap piece of yarn to keep track of the beginning of each round. Move the scrap of yarn up as you complete each round.

  • I chose not to join at the end of each round to keep from having an unsightly seam up the back of my stocking. By not joining, there will be a couple places throughout the diamonds design where the first and last stitches of a round seam “off”. I preferred this to having a very visible seam. You can see a photo below the chart that shows what I am referring to.

*See the chart below for a visual of the stacked diamonds design.

  • After completing the first couple of rounds, you may find that it’s easier to follow the chart below, instead of the written instructions.

How to Read the Chart Above

  • Read the chart from right to left, bottom to top.
  • The Purple squares represent when to work a dc in the FLO 2 rounds below.
  • The White squares represent when to work a BLO sc.
  • Make sure to work the dc in the front loops of stitches 2 rounds below the current round.
  • The vertical numbers indicate the round you’re on. Begin following the chart and working a FLO dc in round 1 of the Stacked Diamonds Design section.
  • The horizontal numbers represent the stitch number. This stitch pattern is a multiple of 10 stitches.
  • The black vertical line is to give you a visual separation of each stitch pattern repeat.
Cream crochet stocking pattern close up showing the seam

Photo Above: This photo shows several rounds of the Stacked Diamonds Design completed.

Seam: Note my scrap piece of yarn. If you follow a line down from the scrap of yarn, you can see how a few of the stitches are offset because I chose not to join at the end of each round. This will be along the back of the leg of your stocking and will not be noticeable when your stocking is hung up.

Pink Arrow: This arrow is pointing to one of the spots I’m referring to. You will have 2 FLO dc that appear to be side by side. This is intentional.

Blue Arrow: This arrow is pointing to a similar spot in the chart (top of a diamond). This is how all of the diamonds that are not in the seam will appear.

STOCKING HEEL

Note: Stitches are worked under both loops. This heel is a crochet short row heel.

Row 1 (RS): With yarn & a 4.00 mm crochet hook, begin by leaving an 8″ tail of yarn to sew gap closed in the next section, then join yarn with a standing sc in the st you marked with a stitch marker, sc in each of the next 20 sts. Turn. (21 sts)

Christmas Crochet Stocking

Continue on with instructions for the Christmas crochet stocking option you chose.

Simple Cuff Christmas Crochet Stocking: Work a surface crochet into each stitch around the top edge of the stocking. Join with a Special Join Technique. Then continue on to Hanging Loop.

Ribbed Cuff Christmas Crochet Stocking: Continue on to the Hanging Loop.

Faux Fur Cuff Christmas Crochet Stocking: Continue on to the Faux Fur Cuff.

Faux Fur Cuff

Note: The cuff is worked flat in rows, seamed, then attached to the top edge of the stocking.

Gauge: In sc, 7 sts = 3.75″

Row 1: Using a 9.00 mm crochet hook & faux fur yarn, ch 8, working into the back humps of the ch, sc in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each ch across. Turn. (7 sts)

Row 2 : Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn.

Rep Row 2 until the cuff measures 15.5″ L (or long enough to wrap around the top edge of your crochet stocking).

Fasten off leaving a 10″ tail of yarn for seaming the short edges of the cuff. Using a yarn needle and tail of yarn, whipstitch the short edges of your cuff together. Weave in ends. Continue on to Attaching the Faux Fur Cuff. Approximately size: 3.75″ W x 15.5″ L.

Attaching the Faux Fur Cuff

Step 1: Slide the cuff over the top edge of the stocking. Line up the top edge of the stocking with the top edge of the cuff. Use a locking stitch marker or two to hold the two edges together while you seam them.

Step 2: Using a yarn needle and 30″ piece of worsted weight yarn the same color as your stocking, whipstitch the top edge of the cuff and top of edge of the stocking together. Make sure that when you insert the yarn needle through the faux fur cuff, that you insert it under a top loop instead of just under the fur. Whipstitch through every other stitch around the top edge of the stocking, but through nearly every stitch of the faux fur cuff.

Weave in ends. Continue on to Hanging Loop.

Continue on to Faux Fur Poms & Tie, if desired.

Faux Fur Poms (Make 2)

Rnd 1: With a 9.00 mm crochet hook and faux fur yarn, ch 2, work 4 sc into the 2nd ch from your hook. Do not join. (4 sts) Use a scrap piece of yarn to keep track of the beginning of each round as you work.

Rnd 2: Work 2 sc into each st around. (8 sts)

Rnd 3: (sc2tog) 4 times. (4 sts)

Fasten off. Continue on to the Tie.

Tie

With a 4.00mm crochet hook and yarn to match your Christmas stocking, begin by leaving an 8″ tail of yarn to tie a fur pom onto, ch until your ch measures 11″. Do not fasten off. Place a stitch marker into the last chain to hold it so you can adjust the length later, if needed.

Using a yarn needle and beginning tail of yarn, weave the tie through a stitch at the top, center back of leg of your crochet stocking.

Tie 1 pom onto the end of the tie without the stitch marker. Knot to secure and weave ends into the inside of the faux fur crochet pom.

Move the tie around to adjust it to the length you prefer. Remove chains if it’s too long, add chains if it’s too short. Once you’ve decided on the proper length, fasten off leaving a 4″ tail.

Tie 2nd pom onto the opposite end of the tie. Knot to secure and weave ends into the inside of the crochet faux fur pom.
