Diamonds Cowl & Infinity Scarf - Free Crochet Patterns

Jan 14, 2020 by Jennifer Renaud

Now that the holiday season has come to a close, it’s time for ELK Studio’s annual Make It For Me Event. During the month of January, Kathy spotlights free crochet patterns on her blog from many of your favorite designers. Each of these designs is a great project to make for yourself after spending countless days crocheting holiday gifts for others. Earlier this month I released my Done in One Beanie for day 2 of the event and today I'm excited to share another fun project for day 15.

Last month, I released my Diamonds Beanie & Slouch as part of a collaborative event with other crochet designers. Because I love to design coordinating sets, it's time to add a crochet cowl & infinity scarf to the diamonds collection of crochet patterns. You can find the free crochet pattern in this post below, or an ad-free print friendly version on Love Crafts here, Ravelry here, or on Etsy here.

For this Make it For Me design, I decided to make myself a new cowl and infinity scarf. Cowls are great for running the kids to school, grocery shopping, and quick trips to town to run errands while infinity scarves are great for enjoying the winter weather while out snowshoeing. Since I do all of the above and these patterns work up relatively quickly, I decided to make both lengths. And because I love coordinating sets, this crochet cowl and infinity scarf pattern was designed to coordinate with my Diamonds Beanie & Slouch, Messy Bun & Ear Warmer patterns.

Because the Argyle Cowl & Infinity Scarf is written in 2 different yarn weights, I've also written this pattern for both worsted and bulky weight yarns as well. Make sure to read the notes section below for a couple of great yarn alternatives. This pattern also includes both cowl and infinity scarf styles.

    THE YARN

For this pattern, I've included instructions for both worsted weight & bulky weight yarns. In the notes section, I've listed a few suggested alternatives to help you figure out the best yarn for your crochet cowl or infinity scarf.

For the samples shown in this crochet cowl pattern, Patons Canadiana Medium Grey Mix was used. 1 ball of this worsted weight yarn will make 1 cowl and 2 balls of this yarn will make 1 infinity scarf.

    Notes

    • The entire pattern is worked in continuous rounds (a spiral). I suggest using a stitch marker to keep track of the round you're on.
    • Yarn Notes: This pattern includes instructions for BOTH a worsted weight & bulky weight infinity scarf & cowl. Paton's Canadiana in Medium Grey Mix was used for the sample shown in the photos. Lion Brand Pound of Love, Wool Ease, Touch of Alpaca etc are great worsted weight alternatives.
    • Patons Canadiana, 100% Acrylic (205 yards / 187 m / 100 g / 3.5 oz)
    • Lion Brand Scarfie, 78% Acrylic / 22% Wool (312 yards / 285 m / 150 g / 5.3 oz). - My favorite bulky weight for this cowl/infinity scarf!
    • Lion Brand Pound of Love, 100% Acrylic (1020 yards / 932 m / 454 g / 16 oz).
    • Lion Brand Yarns Wool Ease: 80% Acrylic / 20% Wool (197 yds / 180 m / 85 g / 3 oz)
    • Lion Brand Touch of Alpaca, 90% Acrylic / 10% Alpaca (207 yards / 190 m / 100 g / 13.5 oz)
    • Pattern Repeats:  In the crochet instructions you'll see: rep from ( to ) around. The instructions written within the ( ) parentheses are one full pattern repeat. You are to repeat these around the entire cowl. The stitch pattern will repeat evenly so you should not have any stitches remaining at the end of each round.
    • The stitch pattern is a multiple of 8. You can increase or decrease the circumference of your cowl simply by adding or subtracting 8 chains from your set-up row.
    • This pattern includes instructions for both cowl and infinity scarf lengths and each is written separately.
    • Changes for yarn weights written as follows: worsted (bulky)
    • Yardage
      • Worsted Weight Cowl: 180 yards
      • Bulky Weight Cowl: 160 yards
      • Worsted Weight Infinity Scarf: 340 yards
      • Bulky Weight Infinity Scarf: 300 yards

Diamonds Cowl & Infinity Scarf Instructions

Step 1: Choose the length you’re going to make, either cowl or infinity scarf, and weight of yarn you’re going to use.

Step 2: Work the Cowl Set-up or Infinity Scarf Set-up, depending on which length you’re making.

Step 3: Continue on to Diamonds Design to complete your cowl or infinity scarf.

    COWL SET-UP

The entire cowl is worked in a spiral (continuous rounds). I strongly suggest using a scrap piece of yarn to keep track of the beginning of each round.

Set-up: With a 6mm crochet hook & worsted weight yarn (6mm crochet hook & bulky yarn), ch 96 (88), being careful not to twist the ch, join w/ a sl st to the 1st ch.

Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 1, working into the back hump of the foundation ch, sc in each ch around. Do not join. Begin using a stitch marker or scrap piece of yarn to keep track of the beginning of each round as you work.  (96, 88 sts)

Rnds 2 – 3: BLO sc in each st around. Do not join.

Do not fasten off. Continue on to Diamonds Design below. Approximate width, when laid flat, is: 14″ (14.25″).

    Infinity Scarf Set-Up

The entire scarf is worked in a spiral (continuous rounds). I strongly suggest using a scrap piece of yarn to keep track of the beginning of each round.

Set-up: Using a 6mm crochet hook & worsted weight yarn (6mm crochet hook & bulky yarn), ch 200 (184), being careful not to twist the ch, join w/ a sl st to the 1st ch.

Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 1, working into the back hump of the foundation ch, sc in each ch around. Do not join. Begin using a stitch marker or scrap piece of yarn to keep track of the beginning of each round as you work.  (200, 184 sts)

Rnds 2 - 3: BLO sc in each st around. Do not join.

Do not fasten off. Continue on to Diamonds Design below. Approximate width, when laid flat, is: 29.5″ (30″).

    DIAMONDS DESIGN

The remainder of this project is worked in a spiral (continuous rounds). I strongly suggest using a scrap piece of yarn to keep track of the beginning and ending of each round.
