Aug 30, 2018 by Jennifer Renaud

The Chevron Peaks Slouch crochet hat pattern is a super quick crochet design that's perfect for the upcoming winter months and it uses less than 1 ball of yarn! It's a fun project that's quick to make and it looks great in so many different colors. You can find the free crochet pattern in this post below, or an ad-free print friendly version on Love Crafts here, Ravelry here, or on Etsy here. *The ad-free PDF includes both the slouch & ear warmer patterns.

Free Crochet Hat Pattern - Chevron Peaks Slouch by A Crocheted Simplicity part of the #HatNotHate campaign #crochet #stompoutbullying #crochethat

This free crochet hat pattern is part of a collaboration with Lionbrand.com. This post may contain affiliate links.

The Chevron Peaks Slouch is the second hat I designed for the Hat not Hate, anti-bullying campaign. Also, check out the River Run Slouch I designed, click here. If this is the first you're hearing of this campaign, Lion Brand Yarns has teamed up with STOMP Out Bullying and together they have launched this awesome campaign to spread awareness about bullying and to teach others how to respond to bully behavior. To read more, check out their blog post on the Lion Brand blog: Use Crafting to End Bullying: #HatNotHate.

    This Campaign Hits Home

When I received the first e-mail from Lion Brand with the details about this campaign, it really tugged at my heartstrings and brought back a flood of emotions. One of my sons was a victim of bullying in school. As a mom, it was one of the hardest things I've gone through. For my son, it was so much worse. I wish I had known about Stomp Out Bullying before, but am grateful to hear of them now so I can educate my kids and share the info with their school.

I hope you will join us in helping to spread the awareness of bullying, not just in schools, but everywhere!

    Why the color BLUE?

Blue is the color of awareness, and also solidarity, so Lion Brand picked their bluest hues for us to choose from to design our hats for the campaign. I chose Lion Brand Yarns Jeans in the colorway Brand New, but you can choose any blue yarn you'd like.

Some other great choices from Lion Brand are: Lion Brand Heartland in Olympic or Glacier Bay, DIYarn in Royal Blue,   Lion Brand Vanna's Choice Yarn in Coloniel Blue, Silver Blue, Denim Mist, Dusty Blue, Midnight Blue.

    Chevron Peaks Crochet Slouch Pattern

    Stretchy Hat Band

Row 1 (RS): Using an 4mm crochet hook, ch 8 (9, 9), working into the back hump of the foundation ch, sc in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each ch across. Turn.  (7, 8, 8 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1, BLO, sl st in each st across. Turn.  (7, 8, 8 sts)

Row 3: Ch 1, BLO, sc in each st across. Turn.  (7, 8, 8 sts)

    Rows 4 - 67 (77, 85): Rep Rows 2 - 3.

Row 68 (78, 86) - Seam Row: With RS facing out, bring the first row up to meet the last row (the first row should be in front if you kept the RS facing out). Position your working yarn so that it's on the inside of the band (See photo & video tutorial here for seam). Ch 1, slip stitch the rows together using the following method: insert your hook (from front to back) into the FLO of the 1st stitch of Row 1, insert your hook (from back to front) into the BLO of the 1st stitch of the last row, yo, pull thru all loops on your hook. Continue in this way across the band to complete the seam.  (7, 8, 8 sts)

Do not fasten off. Continue on to Body of Hat.

    Body of Hat

The entire Body of Hat is worked in continuous rounds. I strongly suggest using a scrap piece of yarn to keep track of the beginning and ending of each round.

Rnd 1 (RS): Using a 5mm crochet hook and working into the sides of the rows of the hat band, ch 1, work 72 (80, 88) sc evenly around. Do not join. Begin using a SM or scrap piece of yarn to keep track of the beginning and ending of each round as you work.  (72, 80, 88 sts)

Rnd 2: BLO sc in each st around.  (72, 80, 88 sts)

See the pink photo below that shows a close up of the stitch work beginning in Rnd 3.

Rnd 3: (FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below, BLO sc in each of the next 7 sts) rep from ( to ) around.  (72, 80, 88 sts)

Rnd 4: (BLO sc in the next st, FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below, BLO sc in each of the next 5 sts, FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below) rep from ( to ) around.  (72, 80, 88 sts)

Rnd 5: BLO sc in each of the next 2 sts, (FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below, BLO sc in each of the next 3 sts) rep from ( to ) around to the last 2 sts, FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below, BLO sc in the last st.  (72, 80, 88 sts)

Rnd 6: BLO sc in each of the next 3 sts, (FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below, BLO sc in the next st, FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below, BLO sc in each of the next 5 sts) rep from ( to ) around to the last 5 sts, FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below, BLO sc in the next st, FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below, BLO sc in each of the next 2 sts.  (72, 80, 88 sts)

Rnd 7: (FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below, BLO sc in each of the next 3 sts) rep from ( to ) around.   (72, 80, 88 sts)

    Rnds 8 - 14: Rep Rnds 4 - 7, ending w/ a Rnd 6 rep.

Rnd 15: BLO sc in each of the next 4 sts, (FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below, BLO sc in each of the next 7 sts) rep from ( to ) around to the last 4 sts, FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below, BLO sc in each of the last 3 sts.  (72, 80, 88 sts)

Rnd 16: BLO sc in each st around.  (72, 80, 88 sts)

Repeat Round 16 until hat measures 7.5" (8", 8.5") from the bottom edge of the hat band.

Do not fasten off. Continue on to Crown Shaping.

Free Crochet Hat Pattern - Chevron Peaks Slouch by A Crocheted Simplicity part of the #HatNotHate campaign #crochet #stompoutbullying #crochethat

    Crown Shaping

Rnd 1: (BLO inv sc2tog, BLO sc in each of the next 6 sts) rep from ( to ) around.  (63, 70, 77 sts)

Rnd 2: (BLO inv sc2tog, BLO sc in each of the next 5 sts) rep from ( to ) around.  (54, 60, 66 sts)

Rnd 3: (BLO inv sc2tog, BLO sc in each of the next 4 sts) rep from ( to ) around.   (45, 50, 55 sts)

Rnd 4: (BLO inv sc2tog, BLO sc in each of the next 3 sts) rep from ( to ) around.  (36, 40, 44 sts)

Rnd 5: (BLO inv sc2tog, BLO sc in each of the next 2 sts) rep from ( to ) around.  (27, 30, 33 sts)

Rnd 6: (BLO inv sc2tog, BLO sc in the next st) rep from ( to ) around.  (18, 20, 22 sts)

    Rnd 7: (BLO inv sc2tog) rep from ( to ) around.  (9, 10, 11 sts)

Fasten off leaving an 8" tail of yarn. Using a yarn needle, weave the tail of yarn in and round, pull tail to cinch the crown of the hat closed, knot to secure and weave in ends.  Finished hat height should be approximately 9-¼" (10", 10-½").

Hi Michelle - If you're having troubles getting your hook in, try using a smaller hook to work into the sl sts. If it's a big problem, your sl sts may be a little too tight. Jennifer

        Hi Dani,

You will be working into the FLO of the st 2 rounds below the current round.

I have a couple pics in my Argyle Hat pattern that may help you with this visual. Look under "Argyle Design - Body of Hat". There are pics right after Rnd 1. https://www.acrochetedsimplicity.com/argyle-beanie-slouch-free-crochet-hat-pattern/

How long should the finished brim be for the largest size? I think I'm goofing up somewhere. Thank you.

        Hi Cynndie,

The band, before seaming, should be approximately 18.25" long. This stitch pattern is stretchy so I recommend seeing how it fits around your head. Some yarns won't stretch as much as others so you may need to add or subtract a couple rows. If you need need to adjust the number of rows, just make sure that for Rnd 1 of the body of hat, your stitch count matches up. 🙂

        I hope this helps,
        Jennifer
