These fun little crochet candy bags are a great stashbuster project!

We recently made them during a Mini Mystery Crochet Along and everyone was able to use leftover yarns they had laying around from other projects.

How perfect is that? A quick and easy crochet project that uses leftover yarn!

Easy Crochet Projects for Valentine’s Day

Have you been scouring the internet asking yourself “What can I crochet for Valentine’s Day?”

If so, you’ve come to the right place! These super cute Valentine Treat Bags make a perfect project to crochet for your kids or grandkids, or for their classmates.

I’ve also crocheted Stacked Hearts Treat Holders for girls in Claire’s class. They double as a headband after the treat is removed. How fun is that?!

Happy Monsters Bookmarks are also a big hit with the kids. These cute little page huggers work up lightening fast and also make a great stashbuster project!

A Great Crochet Accessory for 18″ Dolls

During our Mini Mystery Crochet Along, a crocheter mentioned that she is planning to make these cute crochet heart bags for her granddaughter’s 18″ dolls.

They are the perfect size for an 18″ doll bag! What a fantastic idea!

I have a few other cute crochet projects for dolls you may love too!

Easy Stitches

At first glance, are you intimidated by the textured crochet heart pattern on the front of the candy bag? Don’t be!

This crochet candy bag uses basic stitches, mostly single crochet (sc).

The crochet heart design uses another basic crochet stitch, the double crochet (dc).

To make the heart “POP”, you simply work the double crochet in the front loop only (FLO) of a stitch 2 rounds below.

Sounds tricky, but don’t fret!

I’ve included LOTS of step-by-step photos to help you successfully complete your Valentine’s treat bag!

I used this same technique on my Argyle Beanie & Slouch, the most popular crochet beanie pattern on my blog! Crocheters absolutely LOVE it!

The Yarn

Cotton has always been my go-to fiber for crochet bags and Lion Brand 24/7 was the perfect choice for this project. Available in 37 incredible colors, Lion Brand 24/7 cotton yarn is a worsted-weight, mercerized cotton yarn with a beautiful sheen and fantastic stitch definition.

You’ll find many great color combinations that are perfect for your Valentines Treat Bags.

Yarn Substitutions

Easily substitute another worsted weight yarn with a different fiber content, such as an acrylic like Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice.

You could also substitute a lighter weight yarn, such as a DK or sport weight, for a smaller treat bag. I think it would make a super cute 18″ doll bag.

Or, substitute a chunky or super bulky yarn for a larger crochet bag.

If you choose a lighter or heavier yarn, make sure to adjust your hook size accordingly.

Valentine’s Treat Bag Instructions

I’ve written the pattern as though you’re using two colors for your crochet treat bag.

If you’ve chosen to use only one color, pay no attention to the instructions that tell you to switch colors and fasten off.

Crochet Heart Section

This section of the project is worked in a spiral (continuous rounds). I strongly suggest using a scrap piece of yarn to keep track of the beginning and ending of each round.

Color chart for a crochet heart for a Valentine's treat bag.

How to Read the Heart Chart Above

  • Read the chart from right to left, bottom to top.
  • The Red squares indicate when you’ll work a dc. The Green squares indicate when you’ll work a hdc.
  • Make sure to work the dc in the front loops of stitches 2 rounds below the current round. The hdc is worked in the front loop of a stitch 1 round below.
  • The vertical numbers indicate the round you’re on. Begin following the chart and working a dc in round 1 of Heart Design.

How to Change Colors to make a Heart in your MC

Work your color changes as shown in this Color Change Tutorial.

I chose to work my color changes like tapestry crochet. I worked over my unused yarn (you can see it peeking through the white).

To make your heart in your contrasting color, switch to CC when working the last stitch in MC before the FLO DC.

Fasten off. Weave in ends. Continue on to seam the bottom of your treat bag.

Let’s Seam the Bottom of our Treat Bag

Step 1: Turn your crochet treat bag inside out and lay it flat in front of you. Line up the handles on the front and back (this will help you find the center of the bag).

Step 2: Using a yarn needle and length of yarn approximately 3 times the width of the treat bag, whipstitch the bottom of the bag closed making sure to work into every stitch. Weave in ends.  (see photo below)

Step 3: Keep your treat bag inside out and position it so that one corner of the seam becomes the tip of the triangle (shown in the photo to the below). Note that the seam is centered vertically in the triangle. (see photo below)

Step 4: Use a measuring tape and find the points on the triangle where it measures 1″ across. Mark both the right and left side with a stitch marker. (see photo above)

Step 5: Use a yarn needle and 12″ piece of yarn and sew from one stitch marker to the next, working thru both layers of the bag. (see photo below)

Repeat for the opposite corner.

Note: I only used white yarn to make it easier to see in the photos. I used my MC yarn when finishing my treat bag.

Step 6: Turn your treat bag right side out. The photo below shows what the bottom of your bag will look like.

Weave in all remaining ends. Fill with your favorite candy!

  2. Hi Jennifer! These bags look so adorable! I’d love to make them for my neices and nephews but I cant seem to find the pattern on your blog – i can see the materials list, Amazon links, more holiday crochet…but no pattern! I’ve tried on my laptop and now my phone – no luck with either. Just wondering what I’m missing!!
