Awareness Ribbon Beanie – Free Crochet Hat Pattern – DK

October 1st kicks off a month of awareness for several very important causes, including National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and World Day of Bullying Prevention. Last year Lion Brand Yarns asked me to design a blue hat for the #HatNotHate campaign. I designed 2 hats (the Chevron Peaks Slouch & River Run Slouch), but felt like this year I needed to design a hat that would cover awareness for ANY and ALL important causes… an awareness ribbon beanie that would become a go-to crochet beanie we can make to donate to causes near and dear to us, one we can crochet and wear to show our support for those we love who are struggling, and to help raise awareness. You can find the free crochet beanie pattern in this post below, or an ad-free print friendly version on Love Crafts here, Ravelry here, or on Etsy here. This ad-free PDF includes 2 files, one for the DK version (here in this post) and one file for the worsted weight version (click here)

When I designed the Chevron Peaks Slouch, for the Hat Not Hate campaign last year, I really loved the technique & crochet stitches that created the design and texture of the hat. I loved it so much that I came up with an argyle design for last year’s crochet Christmas stocking pattern. Then, after completing the argyle stocking, I knew that the design would make a great hat, but I ran out of time last winter to release the Argyle Beanie & Slouch. Everything works out the way it’s supposed to though, right? It did. It became the perfect project for a Mini-Mystery Crochet Along. You can find the free crochet pattern for the Argyle  Beanie & Slouch here.

We just recently finished a crochet along for the Argyle Beanie & Slouch and after the CAL was completed, my friend Deb loved how the design was created and had mentioned wanting to do more with it so I teamed up with her to come up with this design (and we’re working on a couple more for you too!). She came up with the idea of adding multiple awareness ribbons and hearts and multiple ribbons around with no hearts. I preferred the look of a single awareness ribbon beanie. I couldn’t decide which one to offer as a pattern so I chose to offer all 3 in the worsted weight version and a single awareness ribbon beanie in the DK version. I’d love to know which one is your favorite?

Aren’t personalized leather tags such a great finishing touch to add to our crochet items? I ordered these ones and a couple different wooden ones from an awesome online maker. You can find links to where I purchased and a tutorial on how to attach all of them HERE

THE YARN(S)

  • For the DK weight beanies, I designed them using Lion Brand Yarn’s Coboo. This yarn is perfect for those going through cancer treatment and it’s marked with the KnittedKnockers.org seal of approval! This yarn is a natural fiber yarn: 50% cotton, 50% bamboo. It’s so incredibly soft, has an excellent drape, and is currently available in 18 gorgeous shades. Pale pink is perfect for a breast cancer awareness beanie.
  • For the worsted weight beanies, there are several that are a good choice: Lion Brand Pound of Love (it’s so soft after it’s washed), Lion Brand Heartland, Lion Brand Jeans Yarn, and Lion Brand Wool Ease. Please keep in mind that if you’re making them to donate, you should choose a softer yarn. A cotton blend yarn is most preferred, and one without wool as it is itchy and can irritate sensitive skin.

  • Yarn Notes: Lion Brand Yarns Coboo was used for the samples. Another comparable DK weight yarn may be used as long as gauge is met.
  • Lion Brand Coboo in Pale Pink, 50% Cotton / 50% Bamboo (232 yards / 212 m / 100 g / 3.5 oz).
  • Pattern Repeats:  In the crochet instructions you’ll see: rep from ( to ) around. The instructions written within the ( ) parentheses are one full pattern repeat. You are to repeat these around the entire hat. The stitch pattern will repeat evenly so you should not have any stitches remaining at the end of each round.
  • Changes for sizes are written as follows: Child (Teen/Adult Small, Adult Medium/Large).
  • Yardage: 200 (215, 225) yards.
  • This hat is worked from the bottom up.

Awareness Ribbon Beanie Instructions

Awareness Ribbon Beanie – Stretchy Hat Band

Row 1 (RS): Using a 4mm crochet hook, ch 4 (4, 4), working into the back hump of the foundation ch, sc in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each ch across. Turn. (3, 3, 3 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1, BLO, sl st in each st across. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, BLO, sc in each st across. Turn.

Rows 4 – 85 (91, 99): Rep Rows 2 – 3.

Approximate length at this point (un-stretched): 15″ (17″, 18.5″)

Row 86 (92, 100) – Seam Row: With RS facing out, bring the first row up to meet the last row (the first row should be in front if you kept the RS facing out). Position your working yarn so that it’s on the inside of the hat band (if needed, click HERE and scroll down to the seam photos in the tutorial). Ch 1, slip stitch the rows together using the following method: insert your hook (from front to back) into the FLO of the 1st stitch of Row 1, insert your hook (from back to front) into the BLO of the 1st stitch of the last row, yo, pull thru all loops on your hook. Continue in this way across the hat band to complete the seam. (3, 3, 3 sts)

Do not fasten off. Continue on to Body of Hat – Set-up.

Awareness Ribbon Beanie – Body of Hat – Set-up

The remainder of this project is worked in a spiral (continuous rounds). I strongly suggest using a scrap piece of yarn to keep track of the beginning of each round.

Rnd 1 (RS): Using a 4mm crochet hook and working into the sides of the rows of the stretchy hat band, ch 1, work 88 (94, 102) sc evenly around. Do not join.  *Begin using a stitch marker or scrap piece of yarn to keep track of the beginning of each round as you work. (88, 94, 102 sts)  *Note: this is an increase of 2 stitches from the number of rows worked in the hat band. You can place these 2 stitches wherever you’d like. Stitch placement is not crucial.

Rnds 2 – 3: BLO sc in each st around.

Do not fasten off. Continue on to Single Awareness Ribbon Design.

How to read the chart above:

  • Read the chart from right to left, bottom to top.
  • The Purple squares indicate when you’ll work a FLO dc.
  • Make sure to work the dc in the front loops of stitches 2 rounds below the current round.
  • The vertical numbers indicate the round you’re on. Begin following the chart and working long dc in round 1 of the Single Awareness Ribbon Design.
  • The horizontal numbers represent the stitch number.
  • After working Round 17, continue with Round 18 above.
