Head out to your favorite picnic spot with this chic tank top on for both comfort and style.

This crochet tank top pattern is a blend of comfort, style, and creativity, making it ideal for summers. Alongside being lightweight and breathable, you have the option to make it in any color you like, depending on your preferences, and adding all sorts of little details to it such as appliquรฉ and buttons.

You can tailor it to your exact measurements so be sure to read the instructions carefully in order to get the best fit. What better way to wear garments that reflect your individuality than to crochet them up yourself?

How to Crochet a Tank Top

There’s not a lot to crocheting tank tops but since this is measurement-specific, I would recommend you have a clear picture of the pattern before you start. This crochet tank top is constructed in one piece from the bottom up. Those who don’t like a lot of seaming in their projects, this is the pattern for you!

First, you’ll crochet the bottom ribbing in rows and seam the short edges to create a circle. Then you’ll work the body of top onto the bottom ribbing from the bottom up.

Once you’ve reached a specific measurement, you will work panel shaping. Then you will crochet the right and left shoulders for sturdy straps. You will repeat panel shaping and shoulders for the back, then seam the shoulders. Lastly, you’ll crochet a simple single crochet edging around the neck and armhole openings to give it that neat finish.

Best Yarn for Crochet Tank Tops

For crochet tank tops, while there are many options to choose from, I used 100% rayon from bamboo yarn. Its soft texture feels gentle against the skin, making it ideal for warm-weather wear when you want something lightweight and non-irritating. It has a beautiful natural finish that accentuates the stitch combination used in tis crochet tank top pattern.

Rayon from bamboo is generally a cool and comfortable yarn and projects that are made from it have a very flattering look to them. If you haven’t used it before, try it out for this tank top!

Choosing Which Size to Crochet

The model wears a women’s small and is wearing a small sample.

To choose your size, look over the size chart below.

  •  Finished Bust, Panel Width, and Top Length are measurements of the finished garment.
  • This tank top is designed to be worn with approximately 2″ – 4″ of negative ease. Choose a size that is 2″ – 4″ smaller than your actual bust size.
  • For a more relaxed fit, choose a size with a finished bust that is closest to your actual bust measurement.
  • Top length is measured from the top of the shoulder to the bottom edge of the top (including the bottom ribbing).
  • Adjusting Top Length: See the notes at the end of the Body of Top section for adjusting length.

Size & Yardage Chart

Yarn

This women’s crochet tank top pattern was designed with a DK weight yarn to make sure it would be cool and light enough to be worn in the summers. I chose not to use a heavier yarn so that, along with the openwork, you can easily wear this tank top on a hot day out.

I chose Lion Brand Truboo Yarn in the color Rose for my sample. This is a DK weight / 3, rayon from bamboo yarn and is currently available in multiple colors with a subtle shine to them. Whether you want something in a neutral shade or a bolder color, you’ll find many options in this yarn.

Yarn Substitutions

Other DK weight yarns can be substituted as long as you meet gauge and you love the final result. These are some substitutions which I think would be great for making your crochet tank top pattern with:

  • Lion Brand Yarns Coboo (232 yds / 212 m / 100 g / 3.5 oz) combines cotton with bamboo in a 51% cotton, 49% rayon from bamboo blend that is ideal for those who prefer natural fibers in their yarn.
  • Lion Brand Yarns 24/7 DK (273 yds / 250 m / 100 g / 3.5 oz) comes in a mainly cotton blend, with a slight percentage of polyester in its sparkle variants. If you want a variegated option for this project, you’ll find a nice range in this yarn.

The crochet tank top pattern is free below, but if you love to work offline, Iโ€™ve got a couple other great options for you.

Edging the Neck Opening

In this section, you’ll first add a round of single crochet around the neck opening. Then, you’ll add a second round of single crochet stitches with a few decreases to keep the edging from puckering.

Gauge Tip: When working this section, the most important thing is that your work lays flat. If your edge is rippling, try going down a hook size or two. If your edge is cinching inward, try going up a hook size or two.

Rnd 1 (RS): With yarn & a 4.00mm crochet hook, join yarn with a standing sc in the stitch closest to the center of the back of the neck opening, work 1 sc into each sc & ch-1 sp and 2 or 3 sc into each dc & tr around the neck opening. Do not join.

Use a scrap piece of yarn to mark the end of the round and continue crocheting in a spiral (aka continuous rounds). Stitch count isn’t crucial.

Rnd 2: Sc in each stitch around, but when you come to the corners where the shoulder straps meet the bottom of the neck openings, work a sc2tog in each corner to help the curves lay flat. Stitch count is not crucial.

I only added 2 rounds of edging. If you prefer a wider neck edging, simply repeat round 2.

Fasten off. Weave in ends. Continue on to Edging the Armhole Openings.

Edging the Armhole Openings

In this section, you’ll first add a round of single crochet around the armhole opening.

Rnd 1 (RS): With yarn & a 4.00mm crochet hook, join yarn with a standing sc in the stitch closest to the center of the bottom of an armhole opening, work 1 sc into each sc and 2 or 3 sc into each dc & tr around the armhole opening. Do not join. Use a scrap piece of yarn to mark the end of the round and continue crocheting in a spiral (aka continuous rounds). Stitch count isn’t crucial.

Tip: Before adding decreases in round 2, check fit to make sure you like how the armhole openings fit.

Rnd 2: Sc in each stitch around, but if your edging becomes wavy, you can work 2 – 4 sc2tog evenly spaced around the opening. This will help your edging lay flat. Stitch count is not crucial.

I only added 2 rounds to my edging. If you prefer a wider edging, simply repeat round 2.

Fasten off. Weave in ends. Repeat for the second armhole opening. Block to add a professional finish and your new summer crochet tank top is ready to wear!
