Bordeaux Crochet Cardigan Pattern
A crochet cardigan pattern is a great project for anyone who loves texture, warmth, and a bit of colorwork. The raised bobbles add a whimsical three-dimensional pattern to the bottom part that instantly elevates even the simplest outfit.
Making one for yourself means you can choose the exact colorway – whether solid or in a combination – that suits you and sets this cardigan apart. What makes a loose-fit cardigan like this one especially appealing is how effortlessly it combines both comfort with style.
Youโll find the free crochet cardigan pattern in the post below, or you can find an ad-free printable PDF (that includes all photo tutorials + schematic), on Ravelry, or Etsy (aff).

The generous fit of this cardigan allows you to add it to any outfit and all of the extra detailing makes it unique from any other piece you’ll have in your wardrobe. You can crochet it all in one color or customize it into a bold statement piece.
Having a cardigan like this on hand ensures that you’re always warm on a day out. Fold it up and keep it in your car for those unexpected cold evenings, especially when you’re out for a picnic or at the beach.

How to Crochet a Sweater
This pattern has a lot of cool things going on in it and you’re sure to enjoy each step, whether that’s adding color or working up some of the textured stitches.
If you haven’t made a crochet cardigan pattern before, not to worry. This one has a very simple construction. You’ll start from the bottom hem and work up to the shoulders in one go. This is the main body of your project.
From here, you’ll then add the sleeves and add the wide collar. At whichever points you want, you can change color to give this cardigan a really personalized look.

Best Yarn for Crochet Sweaters
For crochet sweaters, while there are many options to choose from, I used an acrylic and wool blend yarn. The added wool content gives it extra warmth and makes it the ideal garment for cold winters. Because of the acrylic, it holds its shape well and has good stitch definition, which is especially great for patterns that have ribbing such as this one.
It’s also readily available and can come in a variety of colors which allows you to choose just the right one for whoever is receiving this crochet sweater.
Choosing Which Size to Crochet
To choose your size, look over the size chart below.
- Fits Bust’ measurement is the measurement of the intended wearer, not the garment’s finished measurement.
- Finished Bust, Sleeve Length, Cardigan Length & Wrist to Wrist are measurements of the finished garment.
- Cardigan length is measured from the nape of the neck down (not including the wide ribbed collar).
- If you’d prefer a longer cardigan than the measurement listed in the table above, simply work more rows in multiples of 2 before working the upper panels. See the note within the written instructions that tells you where you can add length.
- Sleeve length is measured from the garment’s underarm to the wrist. This will differ from your arm length because of the drop shoulder design of the garment. You can easily add length to your sleeve. See the notes in the pattern in the sleeve section after Rnds 30-33.
Size & Yardage Chart
The notes above refer to this size chart.

Yarn
This womenโs crochet sweater was designed with a worsted weight yarn to make sure it would be warm enough to be worn on colder winter days. I chose not to use a bulky yarn for fear it would then be too thick to be worn in the transitioning months of autumn and spring (we want to get the most wear out of this everyday piece).
I chose Lion Brand Wool-Ease in Dark Grey, Light Grey, and White for my crochet sweater. This is a worsted weight / 4, acrylic and wool blend yarn and itโs currently available in glitter, multi, prints, and frosts. This yarn offers a smooth even texture in a contemporary color palette with plenty of neutral tones.

Pattern Notes
- I tend to crochet on the tighter side. You may need to go down a hook size (or two) to meet gauge if you crochet on the looser side.
- First stitch of the row is worked in the same stitch as the turning chain, unless specified otherwise.
- Yarn Notes: Lion Brand Wool Ease (3 oz / 85 g / 197 yards / 180 m / 80% acrylic / 20% wool) was used for the sample in the pictures. You can use another lighter worsted weight yarn as long as it’s similar in thickness and you match gauge. If the yarn you choose is thicker, you may still match gauge, but it will affect the drape of your cardigan.
- Yardage & Colors
- Main Color (MC): Dark Grey 1,200 – 2,200 yards
- Contrasting Color 1 (CC1): Light Grey 390 – 440 yards
- Contrasting Color 2 (CC2): White 80 – 100 yards
- Changes for sizes are written as follows: XS (S/M, L/XL, 2X/3X, 4X/5X)
- Gauge: For the bottom motif section of the cardigan, stitch width is most crucial as this will be the final circumference of your sweater. Approximate heights are listed within the written pattern. After working the first 39 rows, make sure to read the gauge note for gauge height of the remainder of the section.
- Construction Notes: Cardigan is worked from the bottom hem up to the shoulders then sleeves and wide collar are added.
