Cabled Ice Cream Cozy – Free Crochet Drink Mitt Pattern
I’ve been meaning to make a couple new crochet ice cream cozies and drink mitts, but I wanted something that would fit a cozy holiday theme. What screams cozy in the world of crochet… Crochet cables of course! MATERIALS
- Yarn: Knit Picks CotLin / DK / 3 Weight Cotton Yarn
- Yardage: approximately 140 yards total
- You can also substitute a another fiber.
- Crochet Hook: H/8/5.00mm (My favorite crochet hooks are the Clover Amour Hooks, I’ve never had an ache in my hand since switching)
- Scissors
- Yarn Needle

- In ext sc: 11 sts = 3″; 13 rows = 3″

- One Size: 8.75″ W x 3.25″ H (laid flat)
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch(s): chain(s)
- st(s): stitch(es)
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- sc2tog: single crochet decrease
- hdc2tog: half double crochet decrease

- RS: Right Side
- BLO: back loop only

Notes
- Turning chains are not included in stitch count unless noted otherwise.
- Yarn Notes: Knit Picks CotLin was used for the sample. Another comparable DK/3 weight yarn may be used as long as gauge is met.
- Knit Picks CotLin, 70% Tanguis Cotton / 30% Linen (123 yards / 50 g ).
- Yardage – 230 yards of a single color OR:
- Pomegranate (140 yards)
- The cabled portion of this ice cream mitt is worked flat, then folded in half lengthwise and seamed to create a tube. A portion of the edge of the tube is seamed together to create the cozy and then the stretchy cuff is added.
Cabled Ice Cream Cozy & Drink Mitt Instructions
Cabled Section
Row 1 (RS): Ch 42, working into the back hump of the ch, sc in the 2nd ch from your hook, sc in each ch across. Turn. (41 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, ext sc in the first st, (BPdc around each of the next 4 sts, ext sc in the next st) 8 times. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, ext sc in the first st, (FPdc around each of the next 4 sts, ext sc in the next st) 8 times. Turn.
Rows 4 – 5: Rep rows 2- 3.
Row 6: Rep row 2.
Row 7: Ch 1, ext sc in the first st, (skip each of the next 2 post sts, FPdc around each of the next 2 post sts, FPdc around each of the skipped post sts, ext sc in the next st) 8 times. Turn.
Row 8: Rep row 2.
Row 9: Rep row 7.
Row 10: Rep row 2.
Row 11: Rep row 7.
Rows 12 – 13: Rep rows 2 – 3.
Row 14: Rep row 2.
Row 15: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn.
Do not fasten off. Continue on to Non-Cabled Section.
Non-Cabled Section
Row 1 (WS): Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (41 sts)]
Rep Row 1 until the non-cabled panel is the same height as the cabled section when folded over (the number of rows you work is not crucial).
Do not fasten off. Continue on to Joining.
Joining
Fold your work in half lengthwise with RS facing each other, line up the first row of the cabled section with the last row of the non-cabled section, ch 1, sc the 2 sections together by working a sc in each st across (make sure to work through both sections).
Fasten off. Weave in ends. Turn right side out. Continue on to Join the Cozy’s Ends.
Join the Cozy’s Ends
Cuff
Gauge: 13 sts x 10 rows = 3″ (In pattern st: sc one row, sl st next row, hdc next row, sl st next row)
Round 1: Join yarn w/ a sc in st to the left of the whipstitch seam (see photo below), work 1 sc into the side of each row of the cabled section (15 sts total per half) around. Join. (30 sts)

Row 2: Ch 19, working into the back hump of the ch, sc in the 2nd ch from your hook, sc in each of the next 16 chs, sc2tog in the next ch and same st as ch 19, sl st in the next st along edge of the sleeve. (18 sts)
Row 3: No Beginning Ch, Turn, BLO sl st in each st across.
Row 4: Ch 1, Turn, BLO, hdc in each of the next 17 sts, hdc2tog in the next st and next sc along edge of sleeve, sl st in next st along edge of the sleeve.
Row 5: No Beginning Ch, Turn, BLO sl st in each st across.
Row 6: Ch 1, Turn, BLO, sc in each of the next 17 sts, sc2tog in the next st and next sc along edge of the sleeve, sl st in next st along edge of the sleeve.
Rows 7 thru 30: Rep rows 3 – 6.
Row 31: Line up Row 2 w/ Row 30, Ch 1, Turn, sl st the FLO of Row 30 to the BLO of Row 2 across. (18 sts)
Fasten off. Weave in ends. Add ice cream & enjoy!
