Stop & Rewind Sunhat - Free Crochet Pattern *Adult Sizes

May 30, 2018 by Jennifer Renaud

When I caught my first glimpse of Lion Brand's new tape yarn, Rewind, I knew right away that it would be perfect to make myself a new crochet sunhat and beach bag! With summer quickly approaching and the sun's rays getting hotter by the day, I decided to design a new sunhat first. Don't fret, the beach bag will be along soon.

You can find the free crochet pattern for the Stop & Rewind Sunhat in this post below, or an ad-free print friendly version on Love Crafts here, Ravelry here, or on Etsy here.

Free Crochet Pattern - Stop & Rewind Sunhat by A Crocheted Simplicity Sizes Included: Doll through Adult Large

    YARN

Lion Brand Rewind is a polyester/viscose blend. It's super soft, great to work with, and easy on your hands. It is available in 8 wonderful colors that include brights (perfect for summer fun!) and neutrals (perfect for everyday wear). This yarn is great for a variety of projects ranging from year-round sweaters, shawls, and cowls to various home decor items. It is classified as a Bulky/5 weight yarn, however, I found that while designing my sunhat, it worked up more comparable to a lighter worsted/4 weight yarn.

    Materials

    • Yarn: Lion Brand Yarns Rewind in the color Marbles, 1 ball for the Small / Medium & 2 balls for the Large/X-Large (approximately 30 yards from a 2nd ball) Available for purchase on the Lion Brand Website or AMAZON
    • Crochet Hook: H/8/5.00mm; G/6/4.00mm, or size needed to obtain gauge (My favorite crochet hooks are the Clover Amour Hooks, I’ve never had an ache in my hand since switching)
    • Scissors
    • Yarn Needle
    • Scrap Piece of Yarn to use as a stitch marker

Many of these materials are available for purchase through our affiliates below:

    Abbreviations (US Terms)

    • ch: chain
    • sl st: slip stitch
    • sc: single crochet
    • sc2tog: single crochet decrease
    • st(s): stitch(es)
    • sp(s): space(s)
    • Rep: repeat
    • Rnd(s): round(s)
    • yo: yarn over
    • SM: stitch marker
    • 2 dc-cl: 2 double crochet cluster (see special stitches below & click HERE for a tutorial)
    • fpsc: front post single crochet (see special stitches below)

    Fits Head Size

    • Click HERE for Doll & Kids' Sizes
    • Adult Small / Medium: 20-½" - 22" circumference
    • Adult Large / X-Large: 22 - 23-⅕" circumference

    Gauge

    • In linen stitch, using a 5mm hook: 11.50 sts x 15 rows = 3" (see swatch instructions below)
    • In sc, using a 4mm hook: 4.50 sts x 4.5 rows = 1"

    Notes

    • I tend to crochet on the tighter side. You may need to go down a hook size (or two) to meet gauge if you crochet on the looser side.
    • This hat is worked from the crown down in continuous rounds. The only round you will join w/ a sl st will be your very last round. I highly suggest using a scrap piece of yarn to keep track of your rounds.
    • Yarn Notes & Substitutions: Lion Brand Rewind tape yarn was used for the samples in the pattern. Although it is classified as a 5/bulky yarn because it is a tape yarn, it works up more similarly to a lighter worsted/4. So keep that in mind if you're looking for substitutions. Testers had great luck using worsted weight/4 cotton yarns such as Lion Brand Yarns 24/7 cotton.
    • Lion Brand Rewind yarn is the perfect yarn for this design as I did not need to add wire to the brim to keep its shape.
    • Changes for Sizes are as Follows: Adult Small / Medium  (Adult Large / X-Large)
    • Yardage by Size: 230 (265) yards

Reading Pattern Repeats [ to ]

    • Everything written within the brackets [ to ] is one full repeat.
    • Sometimes you will also have small repeats in parenthesis ( to ) that are written within the [ to ]. Rnd 5 is the first example of this.
    • Let's dissect the beginning of Rnd 5 and the first bracket [ to ]:
      • This is what's written: Rnd 5: [ (sc, ch 1, sc) in the next st, ch 1, skip the next st, (sc in the next st, ch 1, skip the next st) 3 times ] work from [ to ] 3 times,....
        • You will work everything from [ to ] as one full repeat. Each repeat is 10 sts.
        • If we write out what's within the brackets in longhand, we would have this:
        • [ (sc, ch 1, sc) in the next st, ch 1, skip the next st, sc in the next st, ch 1, skip the next st, sc in the next st, ch 1, skip the next st, sc in the next st, ch 1, skip the next st ]   (10 sts)
        • After completing everything within brackets [ to ] 3 times, then you can continue on to complete the rest of the round.

    Special Stitches

    • 2 Double Crochet Cluster (2 dc-cl): Yo, insert your hook into the next st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, insert your hook into the same st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through all remaining loops. (click HERE for a tutorial)
    • Front Post Single Crochet (fpsc): Insert hook from front to back to front around the post of the designated stitch, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull thru all loops to complete the stitch.

    Gauge Swatch Instructions  (Linen Stitch)

Row 1: Using a 5mm crochet hook, ch 20, sc in the 2nd ch from your hook, *ch 1, skip the next ch, sc in the next ch, rep from * across. Turn. (19 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in the first st, sc in the next ch-1 sp, *ch 1, skip the next sc, sc in the next ch-1 sp, rep from * across to last st, sc in the last st. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in the first st, *ch 1, skip the next st, sc in the next ch-1 sp, rep from * across to last 2 sts, ch 1, skip the next st, sc in the last st. Turn.

    Rep Rows 2 - 3.

    Sunhat Instructions

Note: This hat is worked in continuous rounds. Do not join at the end of each round, instead place a stitch marker after the last stitch of the round to keep your place. Move the stitch marker up as you complete each round.

        Hi Cathy,

Have you read through the section with the heading "Reading Pattern Repeats [ to ]"? This section will walk you through Rnd 5 and hopefully help it all click. 🙂 Please let me know if you're still stuck.

I thought I had it all read and figured out. I’ll try reading it slower this time. Haha. Thanks!
