Foundation Single Crochet

This tutorial will walk you through how to crochet the foundation single crochet, abbreviated as fsc or csc (chainless single crochet foundation). In simple words, you’ll replace the traditional beginning chains of your project (also known as the ‘foundation row’) with a series of single crochet stitches. Once you learn this technique, you’ll automatically work it at the start of each project because of how easy it is to remember.

You just need a few minutes to learn how to do a foundation single crochet. Grab your favorite hook and a bit of scrap yarn to leap right into this tutorial.

Starting Crochet Projects Just Got a Lot Easier

Foundation crochet stitches are my favorite crochet technique to begin a new project for multiple reasons.

  1. It creates a stretchier edge. Foundation single crochet has more flexibility than a traditional chain, making it ideal for projects that need some give, such as garments, hats, and cuffs.
  2. You skip an entire step. Foundation single crochet form the foundation chain and the first row of single crochet at the same time, so you can get into the project more quickly.
  3. It’s easier to count and work into. Many crocheters find it easier to see and count foundation stitches than chains, reducing the chance of missing stitches or accidentally twisting the starting chain.
  4. It gives you a more accurate measure. Oftentimes, a foundation row of chains will be a bit shorter than when you start working stitches into it (it tends to stretch out). If you need more accurate measurements, especially if you’re designing a project, a foundation single crochet row will give you better results and you can keep adding more, or taking out some, to get the right length/width.

If you haven’t worked foundation starting stitches before, no worries! With a little practice, you’ll soon have it mastered.

When using this technique, you’ll be working your beginning foundation chain and row 1 at the same time. This technique produces a more stretchy edge and also a different appearance than the typical foundation chain method.
