Free Crochet Pattern – Kids Linen Stitch Sunhat

I just recently released the Beach Day Sunhat. This crochet sun hat pattern uses the classic linen stitch pattern for the main part of the hat. During testing several testers asked if I could design a kids version using a worsted weight cotton. So when I saw the Lily Sugar n’ Cream, Pinky Stripes, self-striping yarn, I knew it would be the perfect yarn for this stitch pattern and design!

Claire needed a new sun hat for summer and she asked if I could make a matching one for her doll. This pattern includes 4 sizes: 18″ Doll, Baby, Toddler & Child.

This design is also great for boys. Scroll down to see tester photos!

Notes

Reading Pattern Repeats [ to ]

  • Everything written within the brackets [ to ] is one full repeat.
  • Sometimes you will also have small repeats in parenthesis ( to ) that are written within the [ to ]. Rnd 5 is the first example of this.
  • Let’s dissect the beginning of Rnd 5 and the first bracket [ to ]:
    • This is what’s written: Rnd 5: [ (sc, ch 1, sc) in the next st, ch 1, skip the next st, (sc in the next st, ch 1, skip the next st) 3 times ] work from [ to ] 3 times,….
      • You will work everything from [ to ] as one full repeat. Each repeat is 10 sts.
      • If we write out what’s within the brackets in longhand, we would have this:
      • [ (sc, ch 1, sc) in the next st, ch 1, skip the next st, sc in the next st, ch 1, skip the next st, sc in the next st, ch 1, skip the next st, sc in the next st, ch 1, skip the next st ]   (10 sts)
      • After completing everything within brackets [ to ] 3 times, then you can continue on to complete the rest of the round.

Crochet Sun Hat Instructions

Note: This Crochet sun hat is worked in continuous rounds. Do not join at the end of each round, instead place a stitch marker after the last stitch of the round to keep your place. Move the stitch marker up as you complete each round.

      1. I am confused on a part of the hat. I am new to making hats. The confusion starts in Round 5. I have alot of stitches left after following instructions. Please help. Thanks. Have a video?

        1. Sorry I just saw where Sue asked the same question. I have another of this pattern though. In row 5 it looks as though we are supposed to follow the same pattern over and over so I’m wondering why it is only listed as doing 3 times and then 3 and then no more to complete row. Am I supposed to just do the complete row in the first sequence until the very end and then just crochet last stitch with SC? If so why is the pattern written this way? Like I said I’m new to hats and confused about the way this is written. Thanks so much.

  2. I am totally confused beginning with row 5. Do I do all the stitches kn the brackets 3 x and then 3 more times or do I do just the last in parentheses 3x and then all in the brackets 3 times? Can you please clarify?
    Thanks

    1. Hi Sue – Everything within the brackets is one full repeat, so everything between [ and ] = total of 10 sts including ch-1s… is one full repeat. You work that for 3 times and then continue on.

In other words, if the brackets were written out longhand, it would read” [ (sc, ch 1, sc) in the next st, ch 1, skip the next st, sc in the next st, ch 1, skip the next st, sc in the next st, ch 1, skip the next st, sc in the next st, ch 1, skip the next st ]

      Does that make sense?

Let me know if you have any other questions!
      Jennifer
