Happy Monster Crochet Bookmark – Free Crochet Pattern

For Valentine’s Day I had been trying to come up with a quick little gift that I could make for the boys & girls in Claire’s class that they could use over and over again. While these little guys are lots of fun, I also realize that  kids + candy = BFFs  so we’re planning to add a monster crochet bookmark to the top of a sucker.

The Happy Monster Crochet Bookmark is a super quick little project that requires minimal amounts of both yarn and time. Because I have to make 33 of these little guys, I chose to go with store bought googly eyes (as opposed to hand embroidering eyes on). I think they’re super cute and bring the little bookmarks to life.

Materials

• Yarn: Worsted Weight / 4; (scrap amounts of 2 Colors)
• Crochet Hooks: G/6/4.00mm; H/8/5.00mm; or size needed to obtain gauge
• Scissors
• Yarn Needle
• Googly Eyes (as many as you’d like to add to your monster)
• Hot Glue or Super Glue (to attach the eyes)

Happy Monster Crochet Bookmark Instructions

Monster Body (triangles)  – Make 2

Row 1: With a 5mm crochet hook & MC yarn, ch 2, work 3 sc into the 2^nd ch from your hook. Turn. (3 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in the first st, sc in the next st, 2 sc in the last st. Turn. (4 sts)

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in the first st, sc in each of the next 2 sts, 2 sc in the last st. Turn. (5 sts)

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in the first st, sc in each of the next 3 sts, 2 sc in the last st. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in the first st, sc in each of the next 4 sts, 2 sc in the last st. Turn. (7 sts)

Row 6: Ch 1, sc in the first st, sc in each of the next 5 sts, 2 sc in the last st. Turn. (8 sts)

Do not fasten off. Continue below to Edging.

 

Edging

This section is worked on 2 sides of the triangle only. Refer to the photos below.

Row 1: Ch 1, rotate to work into the sides of Rows 1 – 6, work 6 sc evenly across the side, work 3 sc into the same ch as Row 1, rotate, work 6 sc evenly across the side, ch 1, join w/ a sl st to the first st of Row 6 from the previous section. (15 sts)

 Fasten off. Weave in ends. Make one more triangle then continue on to Adding the Teeth.

 

Adding the Teeth

Row 1: Grab 1 finished crochet triangle, a 4mm crochet hook & CC yarn, join yarn with a sl st in the BLO of the last ch-1 from the Edging, ( ch 4, sc in the 4^th ch from your hook, skip the next st along the edge of the triangle, sl st into the BLO of the next st ) 4 times. (4 teeth)

Fasten off. Weave in ends. Continue on to Joining the Triangles.

 

Designer Tip! If you’re planning to embroider the eyes on, it would be easier to do so before joining the triangles.

 

Joining the Triangles – 2 Methods

Method 1: Slip Stitch Join (my favorite)

Step 1: With right sides facing out, lay your 2 triangles on top of each other.

 

Step 2: Locate the centermost 14 or 15 stitches along the 2 sides of the triangles that you edged. With a 4mm crochet hook and yarn of choice, sl st the 2 triangles together as shown in the photos below. 

Fasten off. Weave in ends, glue on eyes (if desired) and enjoy!

 

Method 2: Whip Stitch Join

Step 1: With right sides facing out, lay your 2 triangles on top of each other.

Step 2: Using a yarn needle and length of yarn 2 times the perimeter of your triangle, whipstitch 14 – 15 sts together from the edging. (whip stitch the stitches shown in orange in the photos above)

Fasten off. Weave in ends, glue on eyes (if desired) and enjoy!

 

 

Voila! Now you have a super cute little Happy Monster Crochet Bookmark for your favorite little Valentine. 🙂
