Christmas Day is just around the corner and as my luck would have it, I just remembered there’s one more person who I need to crochet a gift for.
So, when I find myself in this predicament (which happens more than I care to admit), I like to make quick crochet projects that I can pair with a homemade recipe mix in a mason jar, a small store bought item such as a jar candle, or the recipient’s favorite candy.
This year I’m gifting this homemade spiced chai mix in mason jars. I found the recipe over at Graceful Little Honey Bee. YUM!
There are SO many mason jar recipe gift ideas. A quick search on Pinterest and you’ll find hundreds of recipe ideas for mason jars, including cookie mixes, drink mixes, soup mixes, and so much more!
Crochet Mason Jar Cozy, Candle Cozy, Mini-Basket
The O’ Christmas Tree Jar Cozy has several different uses. The photos in this blog post show you three of them.
Certainly, the most common use for this crochet pattern is a crochet mason jar cozy. But, it also makes a beautiful crochet candle cozy or a fun little crochet basket.
I’m currently using my green sample as a small candy dish.
Crochet Jar Cozy – Home Decor & More
Now, just because I’ve given this crochet jar cozy pattern a name with Christmas in it, this doesn’t mean that you can only use it during the holiday season. Because, this one is perfect for year round use, especially if you have woodland theme decor.
Speaking of a woodland theme, this small crochet basket would make a great centerpiece for a woodland themed baby shower!

A Crocheted Simplicity and Blackstone Designs have teamed up again to bring you another fun, quick, and FREE crochet along. The theme of this crochet along (as you may have already guessed) is jar cozies.
Because Sonya and I have had so much fun coming up with coordinating designs in our past, themed crochet alongs, we decided it would be fun to continue tradition! We have both come up with a fun new design that will add a little Christmas Tree decor to your home this holiday season.
Both new crochet projects are small enough for you to complete in less than a weekend and use less than one skein of yarn total. They’re also great for last minute gifts, have I mentioned that lately?

What Size Jar Candle?
I purchased a large jar Yankee Candle from a local store. You can also find large jar candles, such as Yankee Candles, on Amazon.
Look for jar candles that are similar in size to a quart size mason jar. The large jar candle I purchased is 22 oz.

YARN
For my crochet mason jar cozies, I chose two different yarns. I wanted to make one sample in 100% cotton yarn and one in 100% acrylic yarn.
Evidently, when I think of Christmas trees, I automatically think “green”. But for this project, I think the white works great too!
For the white sample, I chose Lion Brand Yarn’s Vanna’s Choice. Vanna’s Choice is a great worsted weight, 100% acrylic yarn that’s available in 54 colors! You’ll have a hard time choosing colors, but this crochet cozy will look great in many different colors!
For the green sample, I chose Peaches & Creme in the color Rosemary. Peaches & Creme is a sturdy, worsted weight, 100% cotton yarn that is available in many shades of green and more. I chose the color Rosemary because I wanted more of a muted green, not a hunter or kelly green.

- Yarn: Worsted Weight / 4 yarn / I used Lion Brand Yarn’s Vanna’s Choice for my White cozy & Peaches & Creme in Rosemary for my Green cozy
- Yardage: 110 yards
- Crochet Hook: G/6/4.00mm; or size needed to obtain gauge (My favorite crochet hooks are the Clover Amour Crochet Hooks, I’ve never had an ache in my hand since switching).

Notes
- Turning chains are not included in stitch count, unless noted otherwise.
- The majority of the pattern is worked in continuous rounds (a spiral). I suggest using a stitch marker or scrap piece of yarn to keep track of the round you’re on.
- Lion Brand Yarns Vanna’s Choice, worsted weight yarn, was used for the white crochet jar cozy shown in the photos. 100% Acrylic, (solids: 170 yards / 100 g / 3.5 oz / 156 m)
- Peaches & Creme in Rosemary was used for the green sample shown in the photos. (100% cotton / 2.5 oz / 70.9 g ‘ 120 yards / 109 m)
- Yardage: 110 yards
- You can use another similar worsted weight / 4 yarn as long as you meet gauge.
- This project is worked from the bottom up. First, you’ll first make the crochet jar cozy base. Secondly, you’ll crochet the sides of the jar cozy. Lastly, complete the crochet cozy with a ribbed cuff.
- This mason jar cozy can be used as a crochet candle cozy, a crochet mason jar cozy, or a small crochet basket. Refer to the additional photos throughout this blog post that show its’ many uses.
Special Stitches
- Back Post Single Crochet (bpsc): Insert hook from back to front to back around the post of the designated stitch, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull thru both loops on hook.
- Double Crochet 2 Together (dc2tog): (Yo, insert hook into the FLO of the next st indicated, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull thru 2 loops on hook) twice, yo, pull thru remaining 3 loops on hook. Note: Because of how this stitch is being used in this design, stitch count will not decrease. Photos are included in the pattern below.
- Alternate Double Crochet (Alt-dc): Do not ch, instead, insert your hook into the first st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull thru both loops, insert your hook between the legs of the st just made, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull thru one loop, yo, pull thru remaining loops. Click HERE for tutorial.

Crochet Jar Cozy Base
Rnd 1: With a 4.00 mm hook, ch 3 (does not count as a st), work 12 dc into the 3rd ch from your hook. Join with a sl st to the 1st dc. (12 sts) The diameter of your circle should be approximately 1″.
Rnd 2: Alt-dc in the first st, work 1 more dc in the same st, 2 dc in each remaining st around. Join. (24 sts) The diameter of your circle should be approximately 1.8″.
Rnd 3: Alt-dc in the first st, work 1 more dc in the same st, dc in the next st, * 2 dc in the next st, dc in the next st, rep from * around. Join. (36 sts) The diameter of your circle should be approximately 2.75″.
Rnd 4: Alt-dc in the first st, work 1 more dc in the same st, dc in each of the next 2 sts, * 2 dc in the next st, dc in each of the next 2 sts, rep from * around. Join. (48 sts) The diameter of your circle should be approximately 3.5″.
Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in the first st, work 1 more sc in the same st, sc in each of the next 3 sts, * 2 sc in the next st, sc in each of the next 3 sts, rep from * around. Join. (60 sts) The diameter of your circle should be approximately 4″.
Do not fasten off. Continue on to Crochet Jar Cozy – Sides.
Crochet Jar Cozy – Sides
This section is worked in continuous rounds. I strongly suggest using a scrap piece of yarn to keep track of the beginning and ending of each round.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, bpsc in each st around. Do not join. (60 sts)
Rnd 2: BLO sc in each st around.
Do not fasten off. Continue on to Crochet Jar Cozy – Christmas Tree Design.
Crochet Jar Cozy – Christmas Tree Design
This section is worked in continuous rounds. I strongly suggest using a scrap piece of yarn to keep track of the beginning and ending of each round.

Rnd 1: BLO sc in each st around. (60 sts)
Rnd 2: BLO sc in each of the next 11 sts, FLO dc2tog in each of the next 2 sts from 2 rounds below (skip only 1 st behind dc2tog), BLO sc in each of the remaining 48 sts. See photos below for working FLO dc2tog.
Rnd 3: BLO sc in each of the next 6 sts, FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below, (BLO sc in the next st, FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below) 5 times, BLO sc in each of the remaining 43 sts.
Rnd 4: BLO sc in each of the next 5 sts, FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below, (BLO sc in the next st, FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below) 6 times, BLO sc in each of the remaining 42 sts.
Rnd 5: Rep Rnd 3.
Rnd 6: BLO sc in each of the next 7 sts, FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below, (BLO sc in the next st, FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below) 4 times, BLO sc in each of the remaining 44 sts.
Rnd 7: BLO sc in each of the next 8 sts, FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below, (BLO sc in the next st, FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below) 3 times, BLO sc in each of the remaining 45 sts.
Rnd 8: Rep Rnd 6.
Rnd 9: Rep Rnd 7.
Rnd 10: BLO sc in each of the next 9 sts, FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below, (BLO sc in the next st, FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below) 2 times, BLO sc in each of the remaining 46 sts.
Rnd 11: BLO sc in each of the next 10 sts, FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below, BLO sc in the next st, FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below, BLO sc in each of the remaining 47 sts.
Rnd 12: Rep Rnd 10.
Rnd 13: Rep Rnd 11.
Rnd 14: BLO sc in each of the next 11 sts, FLO dc in the next st 2 rnds below, BLO sc in each of the remaining 48 sts.
Rnds 15 – 16: BLO sc in each st around.
At the end of Rnd 16, join with a sl st to the 1st st.
Do not fasten off. Continue on to the Ribbed Cuff. Approximate height of the crochet jar cozy should be 4″ at this point.
HOW TO READ THE CHART ABOVE:
- Read the chart from right to left, bottom to top.
- The Green squares indicate when you’ll work a dc.
- Make sure to work the dc in the front loops of stitches 2 rounds below the current round.
- The vertical numbers indicate the round you’re on.
- After working Round 14, continue with Round 15 of the written instructions above.
Ribbed Crochet Cuff
Row 1: Continuing on from the Crochet Jar Cozy – Christmas Tree Design, ch 13, working into the back humps of the ch, hdc in the 2nd ch from your hook, hdc in each of the next 10 sts, hdc2tog in next st and same st as ch 13. Do not turn yet. (12 sts)
Row 2: ( Sl st into the NEXT st along the top edge of the cozy ) twice, Turn, BLO hdc in each of the next 12 sts. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 3: Ch 1, BLO hdc in the first st, BLO hdc in each of the next 10 sts, BLO hdc2tog in the next st and the NEXT st along the top edge of the cozy. (12 sts)
Rows 4 – 39: Rep Rows 2 – 3, ending with a Row 2 repeat.
Seam Cuff: Line up the first and last row sts, lay the last row on top of the first row, seam the rows together by working a sl st through both loops of the last row sts and the BLO of the first row sts across. (12 sts). See photos below of seaming.
The photos below are of another design, but the technique used to seam the ribbed cuff is the same.
Photo Above Left: This photo shows the beginning of the seam. Line up the first and last row stitches.
Photo Above Center: Begin to seam the rows together by inserting your hook into BOTH loops of the last row.
Photo Above Right: Next, insert your hook, from back to front, into the BLO of the next st of the first row.
Photo Above Left: This photo shows the progression of the seam being worked.
Photo Above Right: This photo shows the completed seam.
Fasten off. Weave in ends. Fold cuff in half and sew on a Custom Leather Label to finish the look.
