Simple Crochet Star Pattern – 3 Ways – Free Crochet Pattern
Earlier this summer I released the Stars & Stripes Crochet Keyhole Hand Towel. While designing the crochet towel pattern, I played around with several different styles of crochet stars before settling on the ones I used for the towel. The Simple Crochet Star pattern in this blog post includes 3 different styles of crochet stars for you to choose from. One of the three simple crochet star patterns below is sure to be the perfect crochet star for your next project!

Crochet stars are quick little projects and they have many fun uses. Use your scrap yarn to make colorful little crochet gift tags. Make a whole bunch of little crochet stars and string them together for a fun, festive garland. They also make great little crochet appliques that you can sew onto crochet or other projects!
YARN
I love to use cotton yarns for crochet motifs. There are several cotton yarns out there that would be perfect for this project, but I chose to use Lily Sugar n’ Cream 100% worsted weight cotton yarn. Lily Sugar n’ Cream is available in 39 colors so I was able to find the perfect colors I needed for this project within the same yarn line.

Materials
- Yarn: Yarn I used for my sample is Lily Sugar n’ Cream; 4 / Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn; (100% cotton / 120 yards / 70.9 g / 109 m / 2.5 oz )
- Crochet Hook: H/8/5.0mm (my favorite hooks are Clover Amour Hooks, I’ve never had an ache in my hand since switching)
- Measuring Tape
- Scissors

- Stars: 3″ across (tip to tip)
Size
- One Size: 3″
Notes
- I tend to crochet on the tighter side. You may find yourself needing to go down a hook size (or two) to properly meet gauge, but gauge isn’t critical for this project.
- Yarn Notes: Lily Sugar n’ Cream worsted weight cotton yarn was used for the sample, 100% Cotton (120 yards / 109 m / 71 g / 2.5 oz).
- Yardage: 4 yards
- Yarns of a similar weight can be substituted.
Simple Crochet Star Instructions
Simple Crochet Stars – 3 Ways
Option #1 – Photo Above Left: These stars are the simplest of the 3 as they are worked in a solid color. Crochet Rounds 1 – 4 using the same color.
Option #2 – Photo Above Center: Crochet Rounds 1 – 3 using white yarn. Crochet Round 4 using a contrasting color.
Option #3 – Photo Above Right: Crochet Rounds 1 – 4 using white. Fasten off white and weave in ends. Then, using a contrasting color and 5.00mm crochet hook, work a round of surface crochet in the stitches from Round 4 (Surface Crochet Tutorial – Click Here). Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Star Instructions
Note: The star is worked in continuous rounds to keep from having an unsightly seam. Do not join at the end of each round, instead use a scrap piece of yarn to keep track of the beginning of each round. Move the scrap of yarn up as you complete each round.
Rnd 1 (RS): With MC yarn & a 5.00mm crochet hook, ch 2, work 5 sc into the 2nd ch from your hook. Do not join. (5 sts)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around. (10 sts)
Rnd 3: * sl st in the next st, (hdc, dc, ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch, dc, hdc) in the next st, rep from * around. Do not join. (5 star points)
Rnd 4: * sl st into the next sl st, sc in each of the next 2 sts, 3 sc in tip of next star point, sc in each of the next 2 sts, rep from * around. Do not join.
Note: I used a contrasting yarn in the photos below to help show the stitches more clearly.
Fasten off leaving a 6″ tail of yarn. Use a yarn needle and sew the tail of yarn into the beginning sl st of the round. Weave in ends.
