Free Crochet Pattern & DIY | “Ghostly Lights” Necklace
My 8 year old asked me if I could make her a ghost necklace to wear to school for her Halloween party at school since they don’t allow costumes. That’s when the idea came to me to incorporate glow-sticks to make her necklace extra special and when the idea for the “Ghostly Lights” Necklace was born! 😀
“Ghostly Lights” Necklace
Materials: US Size G/6/4.00mm crochet hook (See our affiliates for my favorite hooks: Clover 1045/G Purple Amour Crochet Hook, Size G, 4.0mm, yarn needle, scissors, stitch markers
Yarn: Worsted Weight / 4, I used Caron Simply Soft in White; Black yarn, cotton thread or embroidery floss (for facial features)

Stitch Abbreviations
ch(s): chain(s)
sc: single crochet
yo: yarn over
FLO: front loop only
inv slst2tog: See Special Stitches
Special Stitches:
inv slst2tog: invisible slip stitch decrease: Insert hook into the FLO of next st, do not yo, insert hook into the FLO of next st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull thru both loops on hook.
Note: Project is worked in continuous rounds. The use of stitch markers will make it easier for you to keep track of rounds. Move them up as you complete a round to help you keep your place.
Instructions
Round 1: Begin w/ a Magic Ring, work 6 sc in magic ring. – 6 sts *Do not pull yarn tight to close the magic ring. You need to leave an opening big enough for the skinny end of the glow stick to fit thru.
Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. – 12 sts
Round 3: [ 2 sc in next st, sc in next st ] repeat from [ to ] around. – 18 sts
Rounds 4 thru 6: sc in each st around. – 18 sts
Round 7: [ invslst2tog, sc in next st ] repeat from [ to ] around. – 12 sts
Round 8: sc in each st around. – 12 sts
Round 9: FLO [ 2 sc in next st, sc in next st ] repeat from [ to ] around. – 18 sts
Rounds 10 & 11: sc in each st around. – 18 sts
Round 12: [ 2 sc in next st, sc in next st ] repeat from [ to ] around. – 27 sts
Rounds 13 thru 18: sc in each st around. – 27 sts
Round 19: [ sc in next st, dc in next st, tr in next st, ch 6, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, sl st in 1st ch, ch 3, sl st in next st along edge of ghost, sc in next st, dc in next st, ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, ch 2, sl st in next st along edge of ghost ] repeat from [ to ] around. Join w/ a sl st to 1st st of the round. – 8 jagged peeks
Fasten off. Weave in ends. Continue on to Finishing.
Finishing
You can use black yarn, cotton thread or embroidery floss to add a face to your ghost. I chose to use Aunt Lydia’s Cotton Thread (10) and a yarn needle.
Eyes: I added the eyes in Round 5. I wound the thread around a stitch until it was as thick as I liked…4-5 times. I then repeated this in the 3rd st to the left. If you’re using yarn, you may only need to wrap the stitch once.
Mouth: I added the mouth around Rounds 7 & 8. I began by wrapping the yarn vertically around stitches in Rounds 7 & 8, centered between the eyes. I wrapped them twice then wrapped the yarn horizontally around the center of the mouth. I didn’t really have a rhyme or reason to making the mouth. I just played around with the thread until I liked the way it looked. If you’re using yarn, you may not need to wrap the yarn as many times.
Adding a glow-stick: Insert a glow-stick, skinny tip first, into the bottom of the ghost. Pull the skinny tip of the glow-stick thru the opening in round 1. Thread a strand (or 3 strands) of yarn thru the hole in the tip of the glow-stick to create a necklace. You can create a chain for a necklace too. I didn’t bother because we’ll be replacing the glow-stick frequently as my 8 year old loves her “Ghostly Lights” Necklace.
