Chewy’s Crochet Dog Sweater – Free Crochet Pattern for Pets

Whether you crochet for your own fur baby or your local humane society, you can wrap any dog in style and warmth with Chewy’s Crochet Dog Sweater. Ever since designing the Cabled Dog Sweater a few years ago, I’ve wanted to create an easier crochet dog sweater pattern for those who like texture, but not cables. Chewy’s Crochet Dog Sweater is an easy, yet stylish design that is crocheted in only one piece. And when making the smaller sizes, it’s a great 1 skein project!

You can find the free dog sweater crochet pattern for Chewy’s Crochet Dog Sweater in this post below, or an ad-free print friendly version on Love Crafts here, Ravelry here, or on Etsy here.

YARN

For this crochet dog sweater, I chose Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, which is a worsted weight yarn. Vanna’s Choice is a 100% acrylic yarn that is available in 36 gorgeous colors. Each ball of a solid color of Vanna’s Choice yarn is 170 yards so if you’re making one of the smaller sizes, this is a great one skein project! Even the largest sizes will use less than 2 balls of yarn. With 36 colors to choose from, you’re sure to find the perfect color for your pet within this yarn line!

Notes

  • Turning chains are not included in stitch count.
  • The first stitch of each row is worked into the same stitch as the turning chain.
  • I tend to crochet on the tighter side. You may find yourself needing to go down a hook size (or two) to properly meet gauge.
  • Yarn Notes: Lion Brand Yarns Vanna’s Choice in Dusty Blue & Linen were used for the samples shown, worsted weight yarn, 100% Acrylic, (solids: 170 yards / 100 g / 3.5 oz / 156 m)
  • Yardage: You will use 100 – 200 yards depending on the size dog sweater you’re making.
  • Another comparable worsted weight yarn may be used as long as gauge is met.
  • Construction: Crochet the stretchy neck band in rows and then join the first and last rows to create a tube. Next, you’ll begin the body of the sweater by working into the sides of the rows of the neck. When you begin the body of sweater you will be working in rows then later transition to working in joined and turned rows.
  • Changes for Sizes are Written as Follows: X-Small (Small, Medium, Large).
  • Instructions are given within the pattern to customize both the girth and length of your sweater.

  3. Hi there! I love your design. I have a question about Row 1 of the body. I think I don’t understand the instructions well. I ended up with 34 stitches instead of 30 (I’m making the small size). I do the 2 ext sc in each of the first two stitches and then do the ch 2, skip 2, 1 ext sc in each of the next two stitches 5 times (after that first one in the parenthesis.) and then the 2 ext sc in each of the next two stitches. Was I supposed to count the 1 ext sc in each of the next two stitches that were in the parenthesis as one of the 5? I hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance!

    1. Hi Leah,

Let me break Row 1 down for you and see if this helps.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, work 2 ext sc in the first st, 2 ext sc in the next st, ch 2, skip each of the next 2 sts, = 6 sts

(ext sc in the next 2 sts, ch 2, skip each of the next 2 sts) work from ( to ) 5 times, = 20 sts

then work 2 ext sc in each of the next 2 sts. Turn. = 4 sts

      30 sts total

      Does this make sense?

      Jennifer
