How to Crochet - Front Post Double Crochet Decrease (fpdc2tog)

The next step in mastering post stitches is learning how to work post stitch decreases. Decrease stitches are most often used to help add shape to a project. The front post double crochet decrease (fpdc2tog) is the most commonly used post stitch decrease.

Let’s begin with a few stitch abbreviations and the written instructions to work a fpdc2tog!

Stitch Abbreviations

ch(s): chain(s)
dc: double crochet
hdc: half double crochet
fpdc: front post double crochet (click here for tutorial)
yo: yarn over
st(s): stitch(es)

Front Post Double Crochet Decrease (fpdc2tog): (yo, insert your hook from front to back to front around the post of the next stitch, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull thru 2 loops on your hook) twice, yo, pull thru remaining three loops on your hook.

Photo Above: With your hook, ch 14, working into the back humps of the foundation chain, dc into the 3rd ch from your hook, dc in each ch across. (12 dc)

Photo Above: Ch 1, turn, hdc into the same st as the ch 1… Now, see the silver yarn needle? It’s inserted under the “posts” of the next 2 stitches. These are the 2 stitches you’ll be working your first fpdc2tog around.
