How to Crochet - 2 Strand Forward Cable (photo & video tutorial)

Now that you’ve learned the front post double crochet (fpdc) stitch, you’re ready to try your hook at the most basic cable around, the 2 strand forward cable. Once you understand the basics of crochet cables, you can try your hand and more intermediate and eventually advanced cables.

Let’s begin with a few stitch abbreviations and the written instructions to work a 2 strand forward cable!

Stitch Abbreviations

ch(s): chain(s)
dc: double crochet
hdc: half double crochet
fpdc: front post double crochet (click to view tutorial)
yo: yarn over
st(s): stitch(es)

2 Strand Forward Cable: Skip the next stitch, work a fpdc around the next stitch, working in front of the fpdc just worked, work a fpdc around the skipped stitch.

Row 1: With your hook, ch 12, working into the back humps of the foundation chain, dc into the 3rd ch from your hook, dc in each ch across. Turn. (10 dc)

Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in the same st as ch 1, hdc in the next st,

Photo Above: Skip the next stitch, work a fpdc around the next stitch.

Photo Above: See the silver yarn needle, that is the skipped stitch.

Photo Above: Working in front of the fpdc just worked, work a fpdc around the skipped stitch.

Photo Above: Hdc in each of the next 2 sts.
