Free Crochet Pattern – Water’s Edge Shawl
I recently purchased a few cakes of Lion Brand Yarns, Mandala. I’m normally a solid color girl when it comes to most everything in life, especially yarn. But the cakes were calling my name from the store shelves, so I decided to give them a whirl!
I purchased a few of the cakes in different colorways. I used the colorway Gnome to design my Girls Butterfly Mandala Vest, the colors were perfect for my youngest daughter! Materials
- Yarn: DK Weight Yarn, 700 yards (Lion Brand Yarns, Mandala, in Genie was used for the sample in the photos) (150 g / 5.3oz / 590 yards / 540 meters / 100% acrylic)
- Crochet Hook: G/6/4.00mm; H/8/5.00mm (My favorite crochet hooks are the Clover Amour Hooks, I’ve never had an ache in my hand since switching)
- Scissors
- Yarn Needle

Finished Size
- One Size / Asymmetrical Triangle: 57″ longest side x 32″ shortest side
Stitch Abbreviations
- ch(s): chain(s)
- sl st: slip stitch
- dc: double crochet
- st(s): stitch(es)
- rep: repeat
- sp(s): space(s)
Notes
- My natural tension is on the tighter side. If you crochet more loosely, you may need to go down a hook size, or two.
- Yarn: Yarn used for the sample shown here is Lion Brand Yarns Mandala 3 / DK Weight Yarn (150 g / 5.3oz / 590 yards / 540 meters / 100% acrylic). The finished shawl used 1&1/6 cakes.
- Although I used Lion Brand Mandala (a DK / 3 weight yarn) for my shawl, you can use another weight of yarn. See the notes at the end of this pattern.
- Shawl Construction: This shawl is worked side to side beginning with the longest edge (57″). Beginning with Row 2, you will decrease every row until you run out of stitches at the end of Row 81.

Gauge Swatch Instructions
Stitch Pattern: Multiples of 6 + 5
Gauge in pattern stitch: 21 sts = 4.9″ + 7 rows = 2.75″
Row 1: Using a 5.00mm crochet hook, ch 23, switch to 4.00mm crochet hook, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, [ ch 3, skip next 2 chs, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch, ch 3, skip next 2 chs, sl st in next ch ] rep from [ to ] across to the last 3 chs, ch 3, skip next 2 chs, 2 dc in last ch. Turn. (12 sts + 3 ch-1 sps + 7 ch-3 sps)
Beginning with Row 2, you will decrease every row so this is why stitch count isn’t given. See photo tutorial below.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc here and throughout), dc in the same st as ch 3, ch 5, [ (dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 sp, ch 5 ] work from [ to ] across to last ch-1 sp, sl st in last ch-1 sp, leaving last ch-3 sp & last st unworked. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 4, [ sl st in next ch-5 sp, ch 3, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 sp, ch 3 ] work from [ to ] across to last ch-5 sp, sl st in next ch-5 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in top of ch 3. Turn.
Row 4: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc here and throughout), dc in the same st as ch 3, ch 5, [ (dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 sp, ch 5 ] work from [ to ] across to last ch-1 sp, sl st in last ch-1 sp, leaving last ch-3 sp & last ch-4 sp unworked. Turn.
Rows 5 – 7: Rep Rows 3 -4, ending w/ a Row 3 rep.
Finished Measurements: 4.9” W x 2.75” H

Row 1: Using a 5.00mm crochet hook, ch 245, switch to 4.00mm crochet hook, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, [ ch 3, skip next 2 chs, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch, ch 3, skip next 2 chs, sl st in next ch ] rep from [ to ] across to the last 3 chs, ch 3, skip next 2 chs, 2 dc in last ch. Turn. (123 sts + 40 ch-1 sps + 81 ch-3 sps)
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc here and throughout), dc in the same st as ch 3, ch 5, [ (dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 sp, ch 5 ] work from [ to ] across to last ch-1 sp, sl st in last ch-1 sp, leaving last ch-3 sp & last st unworked. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 4, [ sl st in next ch-5 sp, ch 3, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 sp, ch 3 ] work from [ to ] across to last ch-5 sp, sl st in next ch-5 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in top of ch 3. Turn.
Row 4: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc here and throughout), dc in the same st as ch 3, ch 5, [ (dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 sp, ch 5 ] work from [ to ] across to last ch-1 sp, sl st in last ch-1 sp, leaving last ch-3 sp & last ch-4 sp unworked. Turn.
Rows 5 – 81: Rep Rows 3 -4, ending w/ a Row 3 rep.
Fasten off. Weave in ends. Block if desired.
Blocking
- Blocking isn’t mandatory, but it does add finishing touches to a garment. It will open up the stitches and give your shawl a finished look!

How to adjust this pattern to use a different weight yarn
Step 1: Choose the yarn you’d like to use and hook size and make a swatch. Do you like the drape of the swatch? If not, adjust hook sizes and make a new swatch. Continue to do this until you’re happy with the look and drape of your swatch.
Step 2: Measure the width & height of your swatch. Fill in the blanks for your gauge: 21 sts = ___”(W) + 7 rows = ___”(H)
Step 3: Calculate your foundation chain:
- If you’d like your shawl to be the same size as the pattern states (57″ W) work the following math:
- 57″ divided by the width of your swatch X”. So, 57″ / X” = A. Then multiple 21 sts (number of sts in the swatch) by A to get the number of foundation chains needed to make a 57″ W shawl. So, 21 sts x A = # of foundation chs.
- Next, take this calculated number of foundation chains and make sure it works with the stitch pattern! This stitch pattern is in multiples of 6 + 5.
- If the number you calculated for your foundation chain is a multiple of 6 + 5, then you’re ready to begin. If it isn’t, then you need to find the magic number closest to your foundation chain number that will work with the multiples of this stitch pattern.
Example:
- I’ve completed a swatch. My swatch gauge is: 21 sts = 6″(W) + 7 rows = 3.5″(H)
- 57″ divided by 6″ = 9.5.
- 21 sts x 9.5 = 9.5 199.5 (round up to 200)
- 200 is the number I came up with for my foundation chain. Now let’s check the math to see if it works with the stitch pattern.
- 200 – 5 = 195 / 6 = 32.5 Since 32.5 isn’t a whole number I need to find the number closest to 195 that is divisible by 6. The 2 closest numbers are 192 and 198. You can choose either. The smaller number will give you a shorter shawl the the larger number will give you a wider shawl.
- I chose 192, then I need to add 5 sts to it to calculate the foundation chain. 192 + 5 = 197 chs
- My foundation chain will be 197 for this example
- That’s all there is to it!!!
