How to Crochet - 6 Strand Forward Cable (photo & video tutorial)

Now that you’ve learned the front post double crochet (fpdc) stitch, the front post treble crochet stitch (fptr), and the 2 strand forward crochet cable, you’re ready to try your hook at a more intermediate cable: the 6 strand forward cable. Let’s begin with a few stitch abbreviations and the written instructions to work a 2 strand forward cable!

Stitch Abbreviations

ch(s): chain(s)
dc: double crochet
hdc: half double crochet
fpdc: front post double crochet (click to view tutorial)
fptr: front post treble crochet stitch (click to view tutorial)
bpdc: back post double crochet stitch
yo: yarn over
st(s): stitch(es)

6 Strand Forward Cable: Skip the next 3 stitches, work a fptr around each of the next 3 stitches, working in front of the 3 fptr just worked, work a fptr around each of the 3 skipped stitches (working from right to left as you normally work).

How to Crochet a 6 Strand Forward Cable

Row 1: With your hook, ch 12, working into the back humps of the foundation chain, dc into the 3rd ch from your hook, dc in each ch across. Turn. (10 dc)

Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in the same st as ch 1, hdc in the next st,

Photo Above: Skip the next 3 stitches, work a fptr around the post of the next stitch.

Photo Above: Work a fptr around the post of the next stitch.

Photo Above: Working in front of the 3 fptr just worked, work a fptr around the first skipped stitch.

Photo Above: Work a fptr around the post of each of the next 2 skipped stitches. 6 strand forward cable is complete.

Photo Above: Work a hdc in each of the 2 remaining stitches. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, hdc in the same st as ch-1, hdc in the next st, bpdc around each of the next 6 fptr, hdc in each of the 2 remaining sts. Turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, hdc in the same st as ch-1, hdc in the next st, fpdc around each of the next 6 bpdc. Turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, hdc in the same st as ch-1, hdc in the next st, work a 6 strand forward cable over the next 6 post sts, hdc in each of the remaining 2 sts. Turn.

Row 6: Ch 1, hdc in the same st as ch-1, hdc in the next st, bpdc around each of the next 6 post sts, hdc in each of the 2 remaining sts. Turn.
